Step One: If You Want to Find True Happiness, You Must Do Something

happy-7.pngSeveral years ago my wife and I went through a series of four classes at our church. Each 2-hour class was offered once a month. The classes were about the purpose and values of the church; how to grow spiritually; how to get involved in ministry at the church, and how to tell other people about Jesus.

Four months later, the teacher of that fourth class asked if we had taken all the other classes. We responded, “Yes.” He asked,  “Well, you know what you have to do now?” My wife and I looked at each other. Then responded, “No, what?” He smiled and said, “Somethin’”.

In a very simple way, that was extremely profound advice. If you want to find true happiness and joy, you must do ‘somethin’. Happiness will not just show up on your doorstep. Get out and take action.

Nothing happens until somethin’ happens. John Maxwell puts it this way, “What separates the developer of a successful dream from a mere daydreamer is committed action.” If you want to be happy, if you want to be successful, if you want to climb to your God-given potential you must get up and do somethin’.

happyIf you have a dream, write down some actions to take and then pick one to do right now. If you are going to make a significant change in your life it must be done immediately and enthusiastically. Do it now and do it with enthusiasm. If it is worth doing then why put it off? Do it now!

If you do not know what to do or maybe you do not have a specific dream to work towards, then just do something constructive. Volunteer with your church or community, go visit someone in the hospital, call someone you have not talked to in a long time. Do somethin’!

Happiness and joy will not find you, it must be sought out. However, if you only self-indulge to make yourself happy, you will never find happiness. If your actions are only for your benefit, then happiness will elude you. The more “others-centered” you become, the bigger difference you will make in your own joy. That is a principle and not a tactic.

So, step one in finding real happiness is “do something”. Tomorrow we will look at step two.  But first, do step one by writing down an action you will take and then get up and do it! DO IT NOW!!  Take a moment and send it to me using the form below…. I’d love to hear your first action step!
