In my last blog, we looked at writing out your “Dream List” or what some people call their “Be, Do, Have List.” If you have not read that blog you can go to it here.

Now, it is time to choose one focus goal from your “Be, Do, Have” or dream list.  You are no longer in the brainstorming stage so pick one that you really want to work on, one that stirs up enough passion in you that you are not going to give up when it gets difficult, because it will get difficult.  If it were easy, you probably would have already reached it.

FOCUS GOAL

Pick your goal to focus on (focus goal) and write it down.

After you write it down, look at it and see if you can make it any more specific.  For instance, instead of saying, “I want to lose weight.” Say “I want to lose _____ pounds.”  How much weight do you want to lose?  How much more money do you want?  What kind of new car do you want?  How much more reading do you want to do?  Make it as specific as possible before you go any further.

It is even better if you write it in the present tense. So, instead of saying “I want to lose ______ pounds.” Write it this way: “I weigh ______.” Our brains help us create what we see as a reality.

Two clarifying questions about your focus goal:

Question 1: What is the purpose of reaching this goal?

Now that you have made your goal clear and specific, let’s get clear about what this goal will do for you.  Ask yourself this question:  What is the purpose of reaching this goal?  In other words, what can this goal do for me?  How will my life be different after reaching this goal?  Will reaching this goal make my life better or worse? What is the purpose of reaching this goal?  The reason you must ask this question is that first, there is no reason to strive for a goal that has no purpose.  Second, it helps you focus on the benefits of the goal which is a motivator for you.  There will be times when you feel like giving up.  If, during those times, you make the effort to focus on the benefit of the goal rather than the trouble of getting there, it will often motivate you to keep going.

Question 2: Will this goal help me reach my purpose?

The second question you need to ask yourself is “Will this goal help me reach my purpose?”  Every focus goal must help you reach your purpose in some way.  If it does not, then it cannot be one of your focus goals.  Your life purpose is your ultimate focus.  So, if your focus goal does not move you in that direction then your whole life is out of focus which means it is not a “focus” goal.  Did that make sense?  I hope so.

Your whole life is about following your God-given purpose.  Any goal that does not move you in that direction does not need to be a focus goal.  You can still have it on your “Be, Do, Have” or dream list and you can still reach and accomplish this goal (as long as it does not take you away from fulfilling your life purpose) but it just does not deserve your focused attention.

Once you have run your focus goal through the focus goal filter you are ready to give it your focused attention. Remember, genius has been described as the “ability to focus on one thing at a time.” Do not try to have a whole list of focus goals. Pick one you can give all of your attention.
