leadership2What are the most important things you’ve learned about leadership?

I have thought several times about that question. More books than can be counted have been written about leadership (John Maxwell alone has probably written more books on leadership than can be counted). However, with all that information, what would I consider the most important? Through reading, watching other leaders,; and almost 25 years of ministry and helping churches, organizations, and individuals climb to their God-given potential, these are what I would consider the five most important things I have learned about leadership.

  1. Love the People

Love the people you are leading. Care more about them as individuals than the vision or the organization as a whole. Some people, once they feel loved, will follow you anywhere.

Find out people’s gifts, passions, abilities, personality, and experiences and then plug them into appropriate roles. Help them through this process. Value who God made them and then place them where they add the most value.

  1. Begin with the end in mind

Know where you are going as a leader. Begin with the end in mind. You have no business leading someone if you do not have a clear picture of where you are going. “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18, KJV).

  1. Lead yourself first

Lead yourself first. Before someone can effectively lead others they must be able to lead themselves. This means knowing how and being disciplined enough to get from where they are to where they want to be.

  1. Follow the ultimate leaderleadership

To be a great leader you must follow the ultimate leader, Jesus. Only those who have learned how to follow can truly lead. To be the best leader you can be you must follow the best leader to ever live.

I feel these are five very important aspects of great leadership. Whether you are a CEO, minister, spouse, or parent applying each one of the above characteristics will improve your leadership.
