How long have you been alive?
This question reminds me of the illustration Tony Campolo uses: Picture the professor asking his class this question. When they began to answer with their ages, he points out that they are merely answering how long their heart has been pumping blood through their body, not how long they have been alive.
Campolo then illustrates the difference by telling of the first time he was on top of the Empire State Building which, at the time, was the tallest building in the world. It was a life-changing, defining moment for him. In that moment, he was truly alive.
Truly being alive has to do with falling radically in love with Jesus and following your God-given purpose. Jesus came that we may have life and have it more abundantly; a life to the full; a real, eternal life, a more and better life than we ever dreamed of. (John 10:10, Msg)
“It is in Christ we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, designs on us as part of his overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone.” (Ephesians 1:11-12, Msg)
That is being alive!
So, I ask you….. How long have you been alive?
