Ephesians 1:11-12 says,
It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone (The Message).
The only way we can fully discover our specific purpose in life is to be in Christ. Our first purpose is to come to know, love, and follow Jesus. It is only in him “that we find out who we are and what we are living for.”
The first purpose of our lives is to make Jesus the forgiver and leader of our lives. That is how we discover our specific purpose, and it is through Jesus that our purpose is given the most meaning and significance. When Jesus becomes the leader of our life, he leads us in the path that God created for us, our purpose. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10, NIV).
If you have not made that decision, I would encourage you to do so. Put your trust in Jesus. Change your direction to follow Jesus’ lead. Make a conscious decision to make Jesus the forgiver and leader of your life. Make that commitment solid by being baptized, and at this point, God’s Holy Spirit will help you live the way God designed you to live. This is the most important decision you will ever make in your life, and it will determine how well you live out your purpose in this life.
As we look at the different levels of purpose over the next two blogs, realize that this step must take place first. As a follower of Jesus, I must say that my life has a level of meaning and purpose it would not have had I never made this decision. Our first purpose in life is to know, love, and follow Jesus.
