Last week my wife and I were invited to a special showing of the movie, “I Can Only Imagine” in Knoxville, Tennessee. So, I took her out to a really nice restaurant… Steak & Shake. We used the opportunity to go on a really nice date. In addition to the movie, we went to the very prestigious…McKay’s Used Bookstore!
I know, I know, I am a hopeless romantic.
Anyway, the movie was absolutely fabulous! It is one of the best Christian movies I have ever watched. It covers the life of Bart Millard, the lead singer for the Christian singing group Mercy Me, and gives the background of the story behind the song “I Can Only Imagine”.
Three themes are played out in this movie:
– forgiveness
– redemption
– following your dreams
Bart’s life reflects all three of these, not in a cheesy – someone says a prayer and everything becomes great- kind of way but in a real way that most, if not all, of those who watch, would be able to identify.
Forgiveness is shown in an authentic way in this movie. Forgiveness is often times a struggle and this movie portrays that side of forgiveness well. However, ultimately it is a core value of Christianity even when it is extremely uncomfortable.
Redemption and forgiveness go hand and hand in what Jesus did for us on the cross. No one is so far gone that Jesus cannot redeem them. Even the worst of the worst can find redemption.
Following your dreams is probably the main theme in this movie. Although, it is tightly connected to forgiveness and redemption. It shows Bart’s determination, fortitude, and enthusiasm for following his dream of becoming a professional Christian singer.
He fought through the struggles, heartache, and disappointment that almost always shows up on the journey to a big dream. At times he wanted to quit, but there was always something that kept him going, not only in his dream of becoming a professional Christian singer but other more meaningful dreams as well!
This movie comes out in theaters on March 16, 2018.
