Third Roadblock : Fear; Blockbuster: Faith

I have been helping dreamers, believers, and achievers climb to their God-given potential for almost 25 years and the most frequently mentioned roadblock with people I have worked with is…fear. Fear of failure, fear of success, fear of losing friends, fear of what others may think, fear of stepping out of their comfort zone, the list goes on and on. Fear is the number one roadblock I have seen for those not climbing to their God-given potential. People are often paralyzed by fear.

Several years ago I heard this acronym for fear:

fear

False

Evidence

Appearing

Real

Most of the fear that keeps people from moving forward is based on speculation at best and complete falsehoods at worst. True story: Several years ago, a man hijacked a plane. He had a box with a bar of soap in it and he told the pilot he had a bomb and to turn the plane around and go to Cuba. The pilot turned the plane around and he went to Cuba.

The evidence was false, but it appeared very real.

So, what is the blockbuster used to bust through the roadblock of fear? Faith! “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1, NIV). Faith will not eliminate fear, but it will give us the courage to move forward in spite of our fear. Everyone experiences fear. It is what we do in the midst of that fear that will be the determining factor in whether or not we reach our God-given potential.

Here is an acronym for faith:

faith1Fearless

Attitude

Inspiring

Troubled

Hearts

Having the faith and trust in God to move forward in the midst of our fears will also inspire others to do the same. As an introvert, I have had to overcome many internal fears in order to follow the plan and purpose God has for me. Faith has made the difference not only in me but also in those I have worked with over the years.

About five or six years ago, I used these acronyms as a Facebook post. Someone commented that the acronyms were cheesy, corny, and trite. Maybe they are, I don’t know. I do know they have helped me put both fear and faith in the right perspective and that has helped me climb to my God-given potential. So, if I need a little corn and cheese to please God then, by all means, bring on the corn and cheese!

I will say that several people came to my defense on that post. The one who made the comment did not put any additional comments. I have no hard feelings toward the one who made the comment. I am saying that what one person may roll their eyes at, another person may take and apply to their lives and it makes all the difference in the world.

I am a simple person and often times simple principles are what help me the most. So, if you feel these acronyms are too corny or cheesy to be helpful, then go ahead and roll your eyes, give a little smirk, and then find something that is helpful for you. Do whatever it takes to climb to your God-given potential.

However, if you are like me and these simple truths help get you closer to your God-given potential, then embrace them. The important thing is not that you like my blogs, videos, books, and teachings. The important thing is that you find the tools to help you climb to your God-given potential!

Motivated by Fear

Moses dealt with fear. Moses was asked by God to lead the nation of Israel out of slavery. He immediately began coming up with excuses why he could not do it.

However, through the conversation he had with God he was able to break through the fear and do what God asked him to do. Not without some great reluctance along the way, but he did what God asked him to do in spite of the fear.

No excuse is more important than following God into something big.

He trained Peter, molded and shaped Peter, and cared for him as one of his closest friends and Peter denies even knowing him. Why? Fear!

Yet Peter went on to do great things for Jesus. He was a leader in the early church that helped the church turn into a movement. He became a pillar of the Christian movement. History tells us that Peter actually lost his life because of his devout devotion to Jesus. Peter overcame his fear through action and love.

Fear can cripple us or it can motivate us. At one point it crippled Peter. But as he took action, that same fear motivated him.

When Mary was first told she would be the Mother of Jesus she was terrified. She was simply a teenager with her whole life ahead of her and then all the sudden she gets the responsibility of being the Mother of the Son of God, the very savior of the world. How is that for a sudden change of events? Yet she accepted the call that God had given her. She stepped up and stepped forward regardless of the fear she faced. She overcame her fear in obedience to God.

Just like Peter, decide to be motivated by your fear. Press on toward the goal to which God has called you heavenward in Christ Jesus!

Are You Ready to Join the Movement?

There are two actions that every believer can take to overcome their fears. We will look at one today and the other one tomorrow.

Walking In Faith!

This is an action-oriented step of faith. I am not just talking about a mental exercise. I am talking about actually moving forward having faith that God will see you through.

I do not know what your obstacles are, but God does. Not only is he willing to walk with you, he desires to walk with you.

You have the creator of the universe wanting to walk with you through whatever obstacle is in your way. That has got to give you confidence!

Jesus said in John 14:1, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me”
(NIV). Trust is more than just an intellectual agreement. Trust insinuates action. Trust that God will walk with you wherever he is leading you. This will give you confidence to step out of your comfort zone.

Who are you going to trust more, God or your comfort zone? Act accordingly.

Yesterday I shared with you Zig Ziglar’s definition of fear, “False Evidence Appearing Real.” Today I would like to share with you Jack Lannom’s (no relation to me because he Image result for join the movement imagesspells his name funny) definition of faith, “Fearless Attitudes Inspiring Troubled Hearts.”

When we walk in faith we not only get inspired we also inspire others. We could start a “breaking out of the comfort zone” movement. Are you ready to join the movement?

I have heard degrees of faith explained this way;
Little faith: God can
Bigger faith: God will
Perfect faith: God has
I would encourage you to go ahead and thank God for what he is going to do as if he already has. That is walking in faith. Maybe you need to build up to that faith. That is OK. Just keep walking in faith until you get there.

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me” (Jesus’ words in John 14:1, NIV).

Comfort Zones Follow You – Get Moving!

There is good news when it comes to overcoming fear for those who are followers of Jesus. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline” (NIV). God has put in you the power to overcome the fear that may come your way.

Often when we feel “timid” or afraid that may be us trying to do things in our own power. When we rely on the power of God within us it gives us the courage to press on in the face of fear. John Wayne said, “Courage is being scared to death… and saddling up anyway.”

Courage is not an absence of fear. It is facing the fear and moving forward. As I wrote Image result for comfort zone imagesabout yesterday, the best way to overcome fear is to take action. If you wait until all the fear is gone you may never do anything.

Often times our fear is not even reality. Zig Ziglar defines fear this way, “False Evidence Appearing Real.” The fear we are facing may seem very real at the moment, but typically it is not. It is just us wanting to subconsciously (or maybe even consciously) stay in our comfort zone.

This is what I have discovered about comfort zones…they follow you. If you step out of your comfort zone eventually your comfort zone will follow you and what was once uncomfortable will become comfortable. At that point, it will be time to step out of your comfort zone again.

If you are truly serious about climbing to your God-given potential, then you will have to rely on your God-given “spirit of power, love, and self-discipline.” Face your fears head on. Step out of your comfort zone and live this God-given life to the fullest!

What fears do you need to face?
What comfort zones do you need to step out of to reach your God-given potential?
What is the next step you will take?

Serving those who want to climb to their God-given potential,
Tommy

God, Save Us From Practical People

Do you know what the most repeated command in the Bible is?

“Fear not” or “Do not be afraid.”  Yet, often times, we are controlled and limited by fear.

I am amazed at how adults change the way they talk to young people as they grow older. When kids are very young we say, “You can be anything you want to be!” We encourage them to dream. We want them to reach for the stars!

However, as they become teenagers we began to say things like, “You need to be practical.” “You can’t always do what you want.” “No one in our family has ever done that.”practical people

God save us from practical people!

Give us people who encourage us to dream. Give us people who continue to tell us we can do whatever we set our minds to. Give us people who are not so controlled by their own fear that they want to control everyone around them as well.

“Fear not!” “Do not be afraid!” Keep moving forward in the face of self-doubt. God is bigger than our fears no matter how practical we are encouraged to be.

My friend, Daniel Matthews, has written a great book on overcoming your fears titled; Spear Your Fear: Five Simple Steps to Retrain Your Brain for Success. In it, he gives great advice on how to move forward in the face of fear. Daniel states, “To keep your fears and self-doubt from winning, find your higher purpose, have a single focus, and look beyond the result by developing process-based goals.”

I believe the Bible reflects the same sentiment in Isiah 32:8, “The noble man makes noble plans and by noble deeds, he stands.”

Develop a focused enthusiasm for what God wants you to accomplish. Then develop specific goals to accomplish that. Then, and this may be the most important factor, take action! Just simply taking action will help you overcome your fear.
