Last year my wife, kids, and I created vision boards for 2018. We all made individual vision boards and we also did a family vision board together. We will do the same thing for 2019!!
Almost every night, we get together before bedtime and each one of us gets to say what we did that day to get us closer to reaching the goals on our vision board. Here’s a clip from a Facebook Live where I demonstrate the first few minutes of our nightly routine. We keep our vision boards where we can see them. I keep mine in my office, the kids keep theirs in their rooms, my wife keeps hers in our hallway (she is brave) where we also keep our family vision board. This way we are constantly reminded of what we want the year to look like.
So, why do I need a vision board? I am glad you asked. There are several reasons, but I have developed a list of my top ten reasons:
#10. Visualization of Your Goals.
This one is kind of self explanatory…..
#9. Makes Dreams More Clear.
When you have a picture representing your dream or goal it becomes clearer in your mind.
#8. Gives Motivation.
Out of sight, out of mind, out of motivation. In sight, in mind, plenty of motivation.
#7. Increases Imagination.
The most powerful nation in the world is…imagination! As you go through the process of finding the right picture or quote for your goals, it jump-starts your imagination. The more imagination you have the more likely you are to reach your goals.
#6. Greater Awareness.
When you keep your vision board in a place where it will be seen several times a day it keeps you constantly aware of your goals. This constant reminder will keep you more focused and more likely to accomplish the goals on your board. This is what a map or GPS does for us when we are driving. It is what a vision board does for us while we are dreaming!
#5. Accountability.
A vision board is a consistent reminder of what you said you wanted. We all need accountability in our lives and a vision board is one more accountability partner. Sure it will not verbally talk, but if you keep it where you will see it several times a day it will speak to you…if you listen! Plus, other people in your home will see it and ask about it. When they do, you want to be able to confidently tell them what you have accomplished.
#4. Clarity.
The process of developing a vision board will help you get clear on your goals. First, you must simply decide what goals you want to reach. Then go through the vision board making process.
As you seek out the picture, quotes, symbols, etc. to help you visualize your goals it gives you more clarity. As you look at those pictures and quotes daily your goals become clearer. Also, the steps to achieve those goals become clearer as well.
#3. Increases Success.
Simply stated, you are more likely to accomplish your goals with a vision board. Again, because of the everyday reminder, it helps you to move in the direction of your goals. It is not magical, as some have stated, but it is powerful in moving you toward what you constantly see. They are so effective that many businesses have started using them.
According to Eilene Zimmerman, a writer from Forbes said that TD Bank has surveyed more than 1100 people and 500 small business owners nationwide. And the survey discovered that those who created a vision board that relates to their goals are almost twice more confident they will achieve their goals than those who do not. And the survey also showed that 82% of the small business owners that used a vision board reported that they have accomplished more than half of the goals they included on that board. The success of using vision boards is valid. When the mind has a consistent picture of your future, it works harder to create it. The reason most goals are not accomplished is not that we can’t do it, but because we do not keep the picture in our head.
#2. Focus.
In my book, GOALS: Godly Objectives Assuring Lasting Significance, I write “Genius has been described as the ‘ability to focus on one thing at a time.’” Where focus goes, energy flows. Without focus, you are very unlikely to accomplish your goals. Almost any significant accomplishment has had intensive focus.
If you struggle with focus a vision board will greatly improve your focus. It creates a stronger visual which will make focus more natural. When focus becomes easy and more natural, you are much more likely to do it. Remember, where focus goes, energy flows.
So, what is the NUMBER ONE reason to create a vision board in preparation for 2018…… (drum roll please…..)
#1. IT IS FUN!
It is just plain fun! It is fun to get together with other dreamers, believers, and achievers. It is fun to dream about the possibilities of 2018. It is fun to find that one special picture or quote that represents your dream.
It is fun to be creative like a kid again. It is fun to create, color, glue, draw, and paste with purpose and meaning!
The environment is fun! Everyone is sharing with one another and supporting each other. Most importantly it is fun to watch how you accomplish new goals through the year and you get to circle that goal on your vision board and celebrate…Have a party!!!
My family and I love doing vision boards. They keep us on task. And they make our upcoming year the best it can be!
