In a previous blog titled, Well-Rounded People Have No Point, I made this statement: “Well-rounded people may be good people. I am not putting them down. They are contributors to their communities. They live stable lives. But intensely focused people…They change the world!” Someone commented that some intensely focused people have changed the world in a bad way.
I have to agree. Some people have changed the world in a negative way. Some people are intensely focused in the wrong direction. However, I would argue that is why we need intensely focused people to change the world in a positive way, people who are intensely focused in the RIGHT direction.
We need people who are so goal-oriented, and intensely focused, that they make this world a better place. They are driven to make the biggest positive impact they possibly can. We need some intensely focused people to change the world…for the better!
Of course, you have to set the right kind of goals for this to be true. What do I mean by the “right kind of goals?” Positive! Noble! Godly! Do not set goals that take you in the wrong direction. You do not want to set a goal to do anything illegal, immoral, rude or that causes pain to yourself or someone else. In the Bible (Old Testament) the prophet Isaiah wrote “… the noble man makes noble plans, and by noble deeds, he stands.” (Isaiah 32:8, NIV)
I also like the way The Message translation words it, “… those who are noble make plans, and stand for what is noble.” (Isaiah 32:8, The Message). As I look at that verse, it makes me think about goals.
First, the word noble means of outstanding character. In other words, if you are a “noble man” or woman, then you are a person of outstanding character.
People of outstanding character make plans (or set goals) that reflect that character. Then they take the action that is driven by their character in order to accomplish those goals.
Noble people set noble goals that create noble action. If you are not a noble person, then your first goal should be to become a person of outstanding character. Until you get that right, other goals will be harder, and oftentimes impossible, to accomplish.
The word “goals” truly does stand for Godly Objectives Assuring Lasting Significance. Your objectives in attaining your goals must be godly. If you are going in the direction God wants you to go then your goals must come from God.
God not only wants us to dream up big goals but I believe He actually implants them in our head and heart. The only way that we can be assured lasting significance is to tap into those goals that God has given to each of us. There is nothing any more significant than that.
Are you ready? Are you ready to assure lasting significance through godly objectives? Are you ready to make some simple changes of habit in order to create dramatic change in your life?
If you said “Yes!”, then here we go!!
