Over the past two blogs, we have looked at how people are energized and how people best communicate. Today we will look at how different people make decisions. People fall into two different areas of how they best make decisions: Thinkers and Feelers.
Thinker
Thinkers are more analytical, reasonable, and tough-minded. Their goal is to find a standard or principle that will apply in all similar situations. They tend to be more impersonal in their approach, they believe they can make the best decisions by removing personal concerns that may lead to biased analysis and decision making.
Thinkers have a technical or scientific orientation. They look for logical explanations or solutions to most everything. They sometimes miss seeing or valuing the “people” part of situations and can be experienced by others as too task-oriented, uncaring, or indifferent.
Feeler
They are more empathetic, compassionate, and tender-hearted. Their goal is to create harmony and treat each person as a unique individual. They tend to be more personal in their approach, they believe they can make the best decisions by weighing what people care about and the points-of-view of each person involved in a situation.
Feelers have a people or communications orientation. They look for what is important to others and express concern for others. They sometimes miss seeing or communicating the “hard truth” of situations and can be experienced by others as too idealistic, mushy, or indirect.
As with the extrovert and introvert; sensing and intuitive; there is no right or wrong when it comes to being a thinker or a feeler. We need both. When they work together, instead of against each other, they both can be more productive, happy, and content.
As you read the descriptions of the thinker and the feeler which one fits the way you see yourself? In realizing your own tendencies you can better understand your decision making strengths and weaknesses. If you are a thinker, get some help from a feeler when making important decisions. If you are a feeler, get some help from a thinker when making important decisions.
