Sometimes people ask me “How do you stay motivated?” My answer is always two-fold, “Make a commitment and take action.” Therein lies the secrets to staying motivated.

  • Make a Commitment

One of my favorite Zig Ziglar quotes is, “Never trade what you want most for what you want now.”  For example, in 2006 I lost 23 pounds.  What made that such a struggle is that I like to eat, especially ice cream!  When I saw an opportunity to indulge in some good quality ice cream, I had a choice.

I could choose what I wanted most (to lose weight) or I could choose what I wanted now (ice cream).  Not to say I quit eating ice cream completely in order to lose weight, but I did seriously limit my ice cream intake. As well as some other foods I have a terrible weakness for.  “Never trade what you want most for what you want now.”

That quote helps me keep my commitments and as result it keeps me motivated. We do not make the commitment because we are motivated, we are motivated because we make the commitment. The commitment must come first. The motivation may wane at times, but if the commitment is there the motivation will return.

  • Take Action

In order to stay motivated, it is very important that you make sure you do something everyday that will bring you closer to one or more of your goals.  Never let a day be wasted.  Even if it is just a little something that only takes five minutes, it is better than doing nothing at all.

This is especially true during the first twenty to thirty days because most psychologists tell us that it takes at least that long to establish a habit.  Doing at least a little something each day keeps those goals in the forefront of your mind so that you do not forget them.  Also remember that action breeds motivation.  If you take action today, you are much more likely to take action tomorrow.

Just like commitment, action must come first. Do not wait for the motivation to take action, take action and the motivation will follow. The hardest part about taking action is getting started. Once you get started the motivation kicks in and the action becomes easier to continue!
