Do You Want to Be a Part of the 6% Club?

Are you ready to quit?

Ready to give in?

Ready to give up?

The second Friday of January is National Quitter’s Day. It is National Quitter’s Day because within the first two weeks of the new year most people have quit their resolutions. They have given in and given up.

Strava Inc. did a study and discovered that as many as 80% of people have given up on their resolutions within the first two weeks of the new year. That is only 20% that have stuck it out even to the two-week mark. However, it gets worse.

Psychologist Dr. Michelle Rozen (“The Change Doctor”), through her research, discovered that eventually 94% give up not only on their New Year’s resolutions but any kind commitment to improve their life. That leaves only 6% who follow through to completion. She has actually written a book based on these findings called The 6% Club.

So, what do the 6% do that the other 94% do not do?

Great question.

Allow me to present the resolution solution. Here it is: stop setting resolutions… set a goal and a plan of action to reach that goal instead. That is the resolution solution.

Isaiah 32:8 says, “The noble man makes noble plans, and by noble deeds he stands.” Make the plans, set the goal, and make a plan of action to reach the goal. Then take action. Do what the plan says to do.

Here is an acronym of the word goal to help you in the process.

G.O.A.L.S.

Goal: Write down your goal. You can type it as well, but make sure you also write it down. The process of writing things down makes a stronger impression on your brain.

Remember PMP when you are writing down your goal.

P: Present tense. Make sure your goal is written in the present tense. It helps you mentally to work toward the goal. Your brain goes to work to make it come true, more so than when you make it future-tense. Write it down as if it has already come true.

M: Measurable. Make it measurable. The more specific you make it, the more measurable it will be.

P: Positive. Write down your goal in the positive. It is not about what you want to lose or quit. It is about what you are wanting to gain by improving yourself.

Obstacles: List those things that are keeping you from reaching your goal. Those things that will at least hinder you.

Action Steps: What steps will you take to get you closer to your goals? You need at least one action step for each obstacle. The only way to overcome your obstacles is to take action. If possible, put a date on your action steps.

Little Bit of Help: Who and what is going to help you reach your goal? If you can reach your goal all by yourself, then it is too small of a goal. Gather a team around or at least a partner to travel this journey with you. Also, list any books, videos, classes, or other training that may help you.

Set a Date: A goal without a date is just a wish. Most wishes seldom come true. Wishes are what the 94% do, but that is not you. You are a part of the 6% club. You do things differently. You do not have wishes and resolutions… You set goals.  So, write down a date you will accomplish your goal.

If you truly want to climb to your God-given potential. Here is some help along the way. I use another acronym of the word climb.

C.L.I.M.B.

Coach: Get a coach to ask questions and keep you accountable along the way. It could be a professional coach or someone who loves you enough to be honest with you. A good coach will always help you go further quicker.

Leader: Find a leader or mentor to guide you along your journey. They may be an example to follow because they have accomplished a similar goal.

Instruction: Learn how to best accomplish your goal. Again, read a book, take a class, or watch a video. Do something to learn more about the direction you are headed. The more you learn, the more motivation you will have. Which leads us to our next piece of help along the way.

Motivation: Keep your motivation high. Use self-talk or motivational priming in the mornings, daily devotionals, pumped-up music, whatever it takes to stay motivated. Also, ask yourself why you want to accomplish your goal. If your “why” is strong enough, you will always figure out the “how.” Plus, the why will give you motivation when you hit problems along the way.

Believe: Believe that you can do this. You have it in you. Believe in what God can do in you and through you. If your goal is a godly goal, and I hope that it is, then you have the Holy Spirit working in you. Keep the faith.

Genius has been described as “the ability to focus on one thing at a time. Set one goal and give it all you have. If you must set more than then prioritize them and give that number one goal everything you have.

Are you ready to quit?

Ready to give in?

Ready to give up?

NOPE! NOT YOU! Because you are part of the 6% club and you have developed a plan of action and you are actually doing it.

CONGRATULATIONS!

And keep up the good work.
