Gandhi & Michael Jackson – Religious Leaders?

plank-eye.jpg“Do not judge others, and you will not be judged.  For you will be treated as you treat others.  The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.  And why worry about the speck in your friends’ eye when you have a log in your own?  How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye.  Hypocrite!  First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.”
                                                    -Matthew 7:1-5 (New Living Translation)

This principle taught by Jesus is also taught by other religious leaders like Gandhi and Michael Jackson (Man in the Mirror… and no, I’m not serious about MJ being a religious leader).

It is similar to the concept that you cannot give what you do not have.  You cannot give good financial advice if you are broke.  You should not try to help somebody live a healthy lifestyle if you are not living a healthy lifestyle.

gandhiGandhi’s sister (not Michael Jackson’s sister… her name is Janet… or LaToya…. or Reba, but you never hear about Reba; I wonder what she did with her life…. well…. anyway….) once brought her son to Gandhi and said “Please tell my son to stop eating sugar.”  Gandhi responded, “Bring him back next week.”

A week later, she brought her son back and Gandhi looked at the boy and said, “Stop eating sugar.”  She asked him why she had to come back a week later.  He responded, “Because last week, I was still eating sugar.”

In Galatians, Paul encourages us to gently restore someone who has sinned.  I believe that is the role with our spouse or any other brother or sister in Jesus.  Of course, it must be gentle and for the purpose of restoration.

We should only point out any follower of Jesus’ sin if we follow these 3 guidelines:

  1. We must take care of the sin in our own life first.
  2. Be gentle in dealing with other’s sin.
  3. Only point out the other’s sins if it is for the purpose of restoration.

Are You Alive?

How long have you been alive?

This question reminds me of the illustration Tony Campolo uses: Image result for alive images Picture the professor asking his class this question. When they began to answer with their ages, he points out that they are merely answering how long their heart has been pumping blood through their body, not how long they have been alive.

Image result for boy on top of empire state buildingCampolo then illustrates the difference by telling of the first time he was on top of the Empire State Building which, at the time, was the tallest building in the world. It was a life-changing, defining moment for him. In that moment, he was truly alive.

Truly being alive has to do with falling radically in love with Jesus and following your God-given purpose.  Jesus came that we may have life and have it more abundantly; a life to the full; a real, eternal life, a more and better life than we ever dreamed of. (John 10:10, Msg)

Image result for ephesians 1:11-12“It is in Christ we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, designs on us as part of his overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone.” (Ephesians 1:11-12, Msg)

That is being alive!

So, I ask you…..   How long have you been alive?

Can Life Coaches Help With Anxiety And Depression?

anxiety           Some would say that life coaching should not be used to overcome anxiety and/or depression. Others would claim that life coaching interventions can be used for mild to moderate anxiety or depression.

Most life coaches and other professionals in the behavioral sciences would agree that any clients experiencing anxiety or depression that are clinical or suicidal in nature should be handled by a licensed therapist. Therefore, a life coach must be willing to refer a client dealing with serious anxiety and depression issues.

David Rock and Linda J. Page (2009), in their book Coaching with the Brain in Mind, give some direction in how a life coach could work with someone experiencing anxiety or depression. In dealing with anxiety, Rock and Page (2009) encourage coaches to help clients get through their anxiety by modifying their beliefs to be more in line with their behavior.anxiety2

The concept of cognitive dissonance, first described by Leon Festinger (1919-1989), is when someone’s beliefs and actions seem to contradict. To have a client modify their beliefs to better fit their behavior would help them relieve the anxiety.

Coaches can also help reduce anxiety by helping them get clear about their goals.  This helps the client focus, reduce uncertainty, and restore calmness.

“We reduce anxiety and the sense of being overwhelmed that comes from the amygdala’s response to uncertainty. As the amygdala is calmed, cognitive functions such as working memory may be energized” (Rock & Page, 2009, p. 255). They also give the following suggestions when working with clients dealing with anxiety:

  • When anxiety strikes, your breathing may become shallow and quick. You can control the anxiety by controlling your breathing. Inhale slowly through your nose, breathing deeply from your belly, not your chest.
  • Stress will make your body tight and stiff. You can counter the effects of stress on body and brain if you relax your muscles.
  • Try positive imagery. Create an image that is relaxing, such as visualizing yourself on a secluded beach (2009, p. 340).

Depression Though depression can be more than a life coach is trained to work with, Rock and Page (2009) give this suggestion when coaching someone with mild to moderate depression:  Encourage the client to develop some level of exercise routine they are comfortable with doing.

According to Rock and Page, the United Press International did a study and reported “that half of patients suffering from long-term depression felt substantial improvement after a 10-day exercise program” (2009, p. 127). According to Rock and Page exercise also helps prevent depression from returning, releases endorphins which help people relax and feel better, and helps people’s thoughts organize themselves.

Life coaches must be careful not to work outside of their skillset. However, when working with mild to moderate anxiety and depression there are some interventions they can practice to help their clients overcome.

Focused Enthusiasm for Entrepreneurs

Finances are important when it comes to running a business.  I have had money and I haven’t had money, it is better to have it.

If you are not making money you will not be in business long. So, how does an entrepreneur reach their financial goals?

  1. Do something you are passionate about. entrepreneur 3
Money is not a strong enough motivator to sustain you over the long haul. Make sure you are doing something you love.
  2. Get focused.
Focus in on what it is you want to accomplish in your business.Put these together and you have focused enthusiasm.

Focused enthusiasm is the main ingredient for entrepreneurial success. Here are some tips on how to develop focused enthusiasm.

Ask yourself 4 questions:

  • How much money are you going to make in the next 12 months?

Get specific. Write down a specific number, not a range. How much money will you make in the next 12 months? It is difficult to focus on several different numbers, so get focused by being specific.

  • entrepreneur marketWho is your market?

Who needs or wants what you are offering? (They are out there, you just have to find them.)

Without a market, you do not have a business, you have a hobby. You have to find your market. There are some people who could care less about your product or service. Let’s be honest, probably most people do not care about your product or service. However, there are some who do care. There are some who will pay for what you have to offer. Find those people.

  • What are some creative ways to get your product to your market?

Use your imagination. The most powerful nation in the world is imagination!

How can you get your product or service to those who want it so badly they are willing to pay for it? You cannot answer this question until you identify your market. You will not discover the best way to reach your market until you get to know your market.

Be creative, use your imagination and think outside the… on second thought, just throw that box away! You have a brain, you do not need a box.

  • How much time and money you will invest into the business?

Decide if this is going to be full-time, part-time, or a hobby. Any option is fine as long as you are making the decision intentionally and not by default. Your financial goal will have to reflect your time investment. In other words, do not expect to make $100,000 this year if you are only investing four or five hours a week in your business.

The more money you want to make, the harder and smarter and longer hours you will have to work. Be intentional.

Remember, it takes focused enthusiasm to create success as an entrepreneur. Just being passionate will not a business make. You need to make some specific plans.

entrepreneur success

Get enthusiastic, get focused, get success!

Follow Your God-Given Dreams

Helen Keller was once asked if there was anything she could think of that was worse than being blind.helen keller.png
John Maxwell defines vision as “a picture of the future that stirs up passion within you.” Do you have vision? Do you have a picture of your future that stirs up a passion within you? The best way to predict the future is to create it.

futureWhat do you believe God’s dream or vision for you may be? Through prayer, reflection, feedback from those who know you best, Bible reading, you can discover your passion. God created you for a reason, for a purpose, for a dream. God has a dream he wants to accomplish through you.

Are you up for the challenge? It will not be easy. It will not always be smooth, but it is where you will live your life to the fullest extent. If you want to climb to your God-given potential, you must discover what God’s dream is for you and then pursue it.

Bruce Wilkinson says, “If you do not follow your God-given dream something significantly important will not happen.”

Several years ago the Statler Brothers had a song called “The Class of ‘57” Some of the lyrics went like this:

class 1957Tommy’s selling used cars, Nancy’s fixing hair
Harvey runs a grocery store and Margaret doesn’t care
Jerry drives a truck for Sears and Charlotte’s on the make
And Paul sells life insurance and part-time real estate.

And the class of ’57 had its dreams
Oh, we all thought we’d change the world with our great works and deeds
Or maybe we just thought the world would change to fit our needs
The class of ’57 had its dreams.

Betty runs a trailer park, Jan sells Tupperware
Randy’s in an insane ward and Mary’s on welfare
Charlie took a job with Ford and Joe took Freddie’s wife
Charlotte took a millionaire and Freddie took his life.

And the class of ’57 had its dreams
But living life day to day is never like it seems
Things get complicated when you get past eighteen
But the class of ’57 had its dreams
Oh, the class of ’57 had its dreams.

(Songwriters DDN REID, HAROLD REID Published by Lyrics © BMG RIGHTS MANAGEMENT US, LLC)

dreams lostMost of the time we do not need to discover our dreams. We typically know what they are, we have just buried them somewhere inside our mind and soul where we do not see them anymore.

Pull them out! Re-discover why God put you on this planet. Do not let the realities of life steal your God-given dreams.

What are some of your God-given dreams?

What Do You See When You Look At You?

The_looking_glass_self (1)     Charles Cooley’s theory of the Looking-Glass Self in its simplest form is the belief that people see themselves the way they perceive the most important people in their lives see them. As followers of Jesus who should be the most important person in our lives? Yep, that’s right…Jesus! And how does Jesus see you? He thinks you are absolutely awesome! Let’s take a look at some of the ways Jesus sees us:

God’s Most Valuable Creation

In almost every day of creation, God looked at what he created and “It was good.” However, at the end of the sixth day of creation, God looked at all he has created and “it was very good.” (NIV) What made the sixth day so much better? I believe it was because God created humans on the sixth day. Humans are the only thing God created in his image and in his likeness. Of all the things God created, we are the most special. We are God’s most special creation! (You can read the creation story in Genesis chapter 1.)

As Loved and Loving

The hypocrisy of the religious leaders was not strong enough to hold Jesus on the cross. The Roman soldiers were not strong enough to hold Jesus on the cross. The nails were not strong enough to hold Jesus on the cross. Satan himself was not strong enough to hold Jesus on the cross. The only thing strong enough to hold Jesus on the cross, was his love for you and I. Not only that, Jesus has called and empowered to continue to love other people in that same manner.

To love without reason. When Jesus was asked what the most important commandment was Jesus responded, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these” (Mark 12:30-31, NIV).

If you want to condense Christianity into a single sentence, this it:love-god-love-people-nothing-else-matters-86028722Jesus sees us as loved and loving!

Created For a Purpose

Simon Peter was just a common fisherman until he had an encounter with Jesus. At once Simon Peter fell in front of Jesus and said, “’Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!’ Then Jesus said to Simon, ‘Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people” (Luke 5:8, 10).

Simon Peter went from being a sinner who could not stand in the face of Jesus to someone with a specific purpose given to him directly from Jesus. Jesus has a specific purpose for you as well. I would encourage you to find out what that specific purpose is and fulfill it. Jesus sees you as someone who was created for purpose!

Someone with Potential

When the religious leaders brought a woman caught in adultery (you have to wonder why they did not bring the man) to Jesus, they claimed the law said they must kill her by stoning. Jesus eventually responded, after playing in the sand for a while, “If anyone of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”

Jesus-Writing-in-the-SandAs Jesus bent down to continue playing in the sand, the religious leaders slowly walked away. Jesus then asked the woman, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” she answered, “No one, sir.” Jesus responded, “Then neither do I condemn you. Go and leave your life of sin.” (You can read this whole story in John 8:1-11.)

Notice that Jesus did not ignore her sin, but neither did he define her by it. He saw a potential in her that the religious leaders did not see (or even care to see) nor did she even see in herself until this point.

Jesus sees you the same way. We have all done stupid stuff and we have all sinned big time (those who think you have not sinned big time have sinned the biggest). However, Jesus does not define you by your sin. Instead, he sees you as someone with potential!

“Jesus would rather die than live without you!” –Bob Martin

What are some ways you believe Jesus sees you?

“I Sure Do Miss The Drugs Though” – Surviving Internal Struggles

johnnycashbonoJohnny Cash was having a meal with Bono (the lead singer for U2) and they both bowed their heads to pray. Johnny Cash prayed and thanked God for the food, friendships, forgiveness, and salvation. After the prayer Johnny Cash raised his head and said to Bono, “I sure do miss the drugs though.”

The Apostle Paul shared some of what was going on with his internal struggles in Romans 7:14-20,

“We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it” (NIV).

I often call this the doo-doo passage. When we find ourselves dealing with these inner struggles we find ourselves in a whole lot of doo-doo. All of us can identify with these struggles because all of us have them. We may not know what to do about it. Ask yourself three questions:

What Do I Really Want?

Many people are not honest with themselves about what they really want.  Honestly ask yourself, “What do I really want?” Matthew 5:6 says, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” (NIV). What do you hunger and thirst for? Is it righteousness or that thing you are having that internal struggle over?

Who Is Really In Charge?

Have you given Jesus the lead in your life? Or are you still trying to be in charge? The word Lord actually means leader, boss, CEO, the one in charge. Are you just calling Jesus Lord or have you actually made him the leader of your life? “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 7:21, NIV, Jesus speaking).

Who Is Really Going To Help Me?

turtlefencepostZig Ziglar says, “If you see a turtle on fencepost you can rest assured that sucker did not get there by himself.” He had some help along the way. If you are going to overcome those internal struggles you are dealing with you will NEED some help along the way.

You do not have to share your struggles with everybody, but you do have to share them with somebody. Find somebody who loves God and loves you to share your struggles with. If there is a sin in your life that you cannot talk to someone about then Satan has already won in that area of your life. Do not let him win!

We all struggle with sin. Even the Apostle Paul struggled with sin. That is why he needed Jesus. And just because we have this sin struggle does not mean we give up. We keep on fighting while relying heavily on the grace and forgiveness of God through our savior, Lord, and friend Jesus Christ!

What have you found helpful in dealing with your internal struggles?

Jesus Vomit

Have you ever thought about Jesus getting sick and throwing up? Is that even right to think such a thing? What would make Jesus vomit?

A bad case of the flu?
Some Middle Eastern contaminated water?
Eating food without washing his hands?

Here’s a thought…. perhaps, it is our lack of passion… hmmmmmm

 Revelation 3:15-16passion
“I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth” (NIV). Some translations actually translate the word “spit” as “vomit”.

Maybe our lack of passion is what causes Jesus to vomit. Find your God-given passion and follow it passionately. Let’s get hot and on fire!

“I know you inside and out, and find little to my liking. You’re not cold, you’re not hot—far better to be either cold or hot! You’re stale. You’re stagnate. You make me want to vomit” (The Message).

What else does the Bible say about passion?

 Proverbs 4:23
“Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life” (NIV). Guard your God-given passion. Do not let roadblocks suck the life right out of you by stealing your passion. “Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that’s where life starts” (The Message).

Proverbs 27:19
“As water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man” (NIV). People define who you are by what you are passionate about. People can see it in your face. “Just as water mirrors your face, so your face mirrors your heart” (The Message).

Matthew 12:34
“For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks” (NIV). What you talk about most is typically what you are most passionate about. If you want to know if your passion is a godly passion, listen to yourself talk, is it godly talk? “It’s your heart, not the dictionary that gives meaning to your words” (The Message).

Mark 12:30
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” (NIV). If you want to have a God-given passion, it starts with having an all-out passion for God.  “So love the Lord God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence and energy” (The Message).

If you do not want Jesus to throw up all over you (I know, that is gross, right? So, pay attention to these next words.) Fall passionately in love with God and then follow your God-given passion…passionately!

How Do I Find Out What I’m Passionate About? – Coaching Questions for Discovering Your Passion

How-to-find-my-passion
Often, after speaking to people about following their God-given passion, someone will come to me and ask, “How do I find out what I am passionate about?” This question breaks my heart. It hurts me to know there are so many who do not live passionate lives. However, it also means they are beginning to think about their passion. If this is you, then the following coaching questions can help you begin that journey!

  • What do I talk about the most?

Matthew 12:34 says, “out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks” (NIV). What you talk about the most is a good indication of what your passion is.

  • Who do I care about the most?

What group of people do you think about helping the most? Who do you feel you can most influence in a positive way?

  • What need or cause breaks your heart?

It may be a hint as to what you are passionate about when you hear about a need or cause in the world that stirs up strong emotion inside of you.

  • What do I dream about?

If you had all the resources and knew you could not fail, what is one thing you would do with your life? When you think about how things could be better, what are you specifically thinking about?

  • What did you want to do when you were a child?

Often times we lose sight of our dreams and passions somewhere between childhood and adulthood. Some people lose them early on and others do not lose them until they get out on their own and the world steals, kills, and destroys their passions. Those passions you had as a child may very well be the passions God wants you to have today.

If you would like to investigate further into your passion after you have answered these questions, please get in touch with me. Even if you just do one free coaching session, it could help you in discovering your God-given passion. If you do not follow your God-given passion, something very important will not happen.

Set Yourself On Fire!

I’ve heard that 18th and 19th-century revival speakers were successful because they would set themselves on fire and people would come to watch them burn. Not literally. They were so passionate about what they were doing that they drew people’s attention. There is something magnetic about passionate people.comte-de-mirabeau-quote-none-but-people-of-strong-passion-are-capable

Comte de Mirabeau said, “None, but people of strong
passion are capable of greatness.” Find your passion! Pursue those things that stir something inside of you, not what brings you the most money. Greatness comes from passion. Look for what you have the most passion about and you will find your greatness!

Set yourself on fire and people will come to watch you burn!

When you are doing what you love to do, no one has to motivate you. Often, we trade in our passion for the mundane, mediocre, and most secure. STOP!

Set yourself on fire and people will come to watch you burn!

170178Larry Crabb says, “The core problem is not that we are too passionate about bad things, but that we are not passionate enough about good things.” God has filled you with a passion. Maybe that passion has been suppressed. Maybe it is hidden deep in your soul, but it is still there. You just have to dig it out. The best part of my job is helping people dig out and discover their passions! Our godly passions can give us life. Tony Campolo says, “The world is not so much sinful as is dead.” Sometimes a loss of passion causes that death. We are still walking, talking, and breathing; but something inside of us has died.

Set yourself on fire and people will come to watch you burn!

Let’s look at the word enthusiasm. The en- of the word enthusiasm comes from the Greek word for “in.” The –thus in enthusiasm is a form of the Greek word “Theo.”  “Theo” is the Greek word for God. The word enthusiasm literally means, God-in-you! If you are a follower of Jesus, then you are a walking bundle of enthusiasm. There is a spiritual passion that lives in and through you.

lowres01

Set yourself on fire and people will come to watch you burn!

  • What is your passion?
  • What gets you up in the morning?
  • What creates so much enthusiasm inside of you that you have trouble sleeping?
  • What has God put inside you that you cannot NOT do it?

Pursue that! Go after that! Live a life of passion, because life is too short to passively wander along without a care in the world. Care! Be enthusiastic! Live life to the fullest! Follow God’s passion for your life!

Set yourself on fire and people will come to watch you burn!
