When I was preparing my first sermon at age 15 my minister at the time, Monty Cooper, sat down with me and walked me through the process. A couple of years later when I decided I wanted to go to Bible college to prepare for the ministry my minister at that time, Don Thie, drove me around to different Bible colleges to see which one best fit my needs. He also began to help me work on creating sermons and gave me several opportunities to preach at my church. When I was in Bible college and struggling academically I was about to give up when my Mom, Dallas Lanham, encouraged me to give it one more try. It took me six years…but I did graduate. (I later got my Master’s Degree and finished with a 4.0, but that is another story for another time.)
My point is that every worthwhile goal I have ever achieved I have had some help along the way. Whatever your goal or goals might be you will need other people to help you along the way. It takes teamwork to make the dream work!
According to Zig Ziglar, “Many people have gone much further in life than they thought they could because somebody else thought they could.” We need people in our lives to help us get where we want to go.
You could probably list some names right now of people who have helped you become who you are, people who have influenced and inspired you… someone who comforted you during a tough time… someone who was a model for you whether they realized it or not. No matter where you are in life somebody helped you get there. Like Zig Ziglar says, “If you see a turtle on a fence post, you can rest assured that sucker didn’t get there by himself.” He definitely had some help along the way. You will need some help along the way as well if you are truly going to reach those goals.
Some of the things you will want to consider when choosing the people to help you:
- Are they goal oriented?
- Do they care about you?
- Will they truly support you?
- Have they achieved a similar goal or are they in the process of achieving a similar goal?
- Do they truly want you to achieve your goal?
- Do they have any experience or expertise in the area of your goal?
- Do they have time to help you?
- Do they have similar values to your values?
- Do they have any experience or expertise in goal attainment?
This is not a rigid list of rules to follow but is simply some suggestions of things to consider. You may add or subtract from this list as you see fit.
I also encourage you to write more than just people on your list. What books could help you achieve your goal? What audio programs? What schools or other institutions? Whatever help you need to make this goal come true for you, write it down.
If your goal is worthwhile you are going to need some help along the way. After you have chosen a goal to focus on begin to list who and what can help you reach that goal. Remember, it takes teamwork to make the dream work!
