When my wife and I notice couples who appear to be happy in their relationship and they appear to have been together a long time, we approach them to find out a little about their story (if it seems they are willing to share). We ask how they met and how long they have been together. If they have been together for several years (especially if they have been married for 50 years or longer) we like to ask them this question, “What is the secret to being happily married for ____ years?” Then we listen carefully to what they have to say so we can understand how we can apply their answer to our marriage. Why do we do this?
Because…..
Success leaves clues!
That is it. Success leaves clues. If we see a couple who have been married a long time and they still enjoy each other’s company, then we want to learn from their success.
This is true in every area of life. If you want to be a successful entrepreneur then find one that is what you would consider successful and learn from them, model them. It will speed up your success process.
If you want to live a more spiritual life then find someone whom you feel is doing that and learn from them. What are their practices? What is their involvement in their church? What books are they reading? How often do they pray and read the Bible? Success leaves clues in every area of life.
You can also learn from their mistakes. You do not have time to make all the mistakes yourself so learn from those who have already made mistakes and have turned those mistakes into success. The only thing better than learning from your own mistakes is learning from the mistakes of others.
So, whatever area of life you want to be better in, find a model to learn from. Read their books. Listen to their audios. Go hear them speak. Walk up to them and ask them questions. If they are somebody you are around on a regular basis then simply observe them and see how they do things. Success leaves clues. You do not have to learn everything on your own. Do not re-invent the wheel. Learn from those who are already where you want to be and you will get there sooner.
Then, one day, someone else will learn from you. When that happens always be ready and willing to teach what you have learned along the way. Why?
