As my wife and I are preparing for our marriage retreat this weekend my heart and mind are focused on marriages. My mission is “to break the monotony of the mundane and the mediocre by bringing as much ENTHUSIASM to as many businesses, ministries, MARRIAGES, and individual lives as I possibly can.” My wife and I have a passion for marriages.
As we look at our marriage retreat, which is called “ENTHUSE: Set Your Marriage on Fire”, our goal is to help couples experience ENTHUSIASM in their marriages. We encourage couples to never settle in their marriages, but always be looking for ways to grow.
Craig Valentine asks the question, “Are you too good to be great?” I would ask that same question about our marriages. We have a tendency to settle for a good marriage rather than a great one. We have been there, we settled, and it almost destroyed us.
Through a number of circumstances and people who loved us enough to pour time, energy, and effort into us, our marriage re-ignited and our fire has been burning strong ever since. Through that experience God not only re-ignited a fire in our own marriage he ignited a fire in us to pour time, energy, and effort into other marriages as well.
That is the thing about a fire. Once it gets to raging…It spreads!
Romans 12:11 says, “Don’t hesitate to be enthusiastic—be on fire in the Spirit as you serve the Lord” (CEB). One of the best ways to serve the Lord is to serve your spouse. Other than your relationship with Jesus, your relationship with your spouse is the most important relationship you will ever have.
George Adams says, “Enthusiasm is a kind of faith that has been set on fire.” Would that not also be a great description of a great marriage? To live out our faith in our marriage in such a way that it would be described as “on fire” and full of ENTHUSIASM.
Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” If we want great marriages we must have great ENTHUSIASM for our marriages. Is your marriage too good to be great?
