Hope as You Climb to Your God-Given Potential

There are moments in life when the mountain ahead looks much bigger than the person standing at the bottom of it.

Maybe you’re facing a career change. Or you might be starting something new. You might be rebuilding after failure or stepping into leadership. You’re trying to become the person you know you could be but you might be wondering: “Can I really do this?”

That’s where hope matters.

The fourth decision in the Enthusiasm framework is: Hope as You Climb to Your God-Given Potential.

God Isn’t Finished With You

One of the most encouraging truths in Scripture is that God is not finished with us. We often look at ourselves based on where we are today, but God sees what we can become.

Matthew 5:1-2 gives us the picture of Jesus climbing a hillside, followed by those who were apprenticed to Him. There’s something powerful about that image. They climbed.

Following Jesus involves movement. Growth involves movement. Purpose involves movement. You don’t discover your potential by standing at the bottom of the mountain staring at the top. You discover it by taking the next step.

Hope Is Fuel

Hope doesn’t mean pretending the climb will be easy. It means believing the climb is worth taking. There will be days when you don’t feel strong and progress seems invisible. There will be days when you wonder whether you’ve made any progress at all. That’s when hope becomes fuel.

Hope says: “Keep going.”
“This isn’t the end.”
“God still has something ahead.”
“I can take one more step.”

Your Potential Isn’t a Destination

We sometimes talk about “reaching our potential” as though potential is a finish line. God-given potential isn’t simply a destination. It’s a journey.

As you grow, your understanding of your gifts grows. As you experience life, your perspective changes. As you walk with God, your purpose may become clearer. The person you are today isn’t supposed to be the final version of you. That’s exciting. Do you know why? Because it means there’s still more.

Don’t Compare Mountains

One of the quickest ways to lose hope is to compare your climb with someone else’s. You see their successes and their accomplishments. But remember, you’re only seeing their highlight reel as you wonder why your climb seems so much harder.

You don’t know their entire story. And they don’t know yours. Your assignment isn’t to climb somebody else’s mountain; it’s to faithfully climb yours. Your journey may take longer. It may look different. It may include setbacks they never experienced. And that’s okay. God didn’t call you to their journey. He called you to yours.

Take the Next Step

You don’t have to see the entire path. You just need to see the next step. What’s your next step? Make the call, submit the application, and have the conversation. Write that first page or take the class. Start the business, apologize, forgive, ask for help, and try again. Pray.

Whatever your next step is, take it. You don’t have to conquer the entire mountain today. You just have to keep climbing.

Hope Changes the Climb

The mountain may not change, but hope changes how you climb it. Instead of seeing every obstacle as proof that you should quit, you can begin seeing obstacles as part of the journey.

Instead of asking, “Why is this happening to me?” You can begin asking, “What can I learn from this?” Instead of saying, “I’ll never make it,” you can say, “I’ll take the next step.” God has more for you. Not because everything will be easy or because you’ll never fail. You will get discouraged.

But your story isn’t finished.

Keep climbing.

There’s still potential ahead of you. And there is still a God who is not finished with you yet.
