Top 10 Reasons You Need a Vision Board

Last year my wife, kids, and I created vision boards for 2017. We all made individual vision boards and we also did a family vision board together.  We will do the same thing for 2018!!

Almost every night, we get together before bedtime and each one of us gets to say what we did that day to get us closer to reaching the goals on our vision board. Here’s a clip from a Facebook Live where I demonstrate the first few minutes of our nightly routine. We keep our vision boards where we can see them. I keep mine in my office, the kids keep theirs in their rooms, my wife keeps hers in our hallway (she is brave) where we also keep our family vision board. This way we are constantly reminded of what we want the year to look like.

So, why do I need a vision board? I am glad you asked. There are several reasons, but I have developed a list of my top ten reasons:

#10.  Visualization of Your Goals.
This one is kind of self explanatory…..

#9.  Makes Dreams More Clear.
When you have a picture representing your dream or goal it becomes clearer in your mind.

#8.  Gives Motivation.
Out of sight, out of mind, out of motivation. In sight, in mind, plenty of motivation.

#7.  Increases Imagination.
The most powerful nation in the world is…imagination! As you go through the process of finding the right picture or quote for your goals, it jump-starts your imagination. The more imagination you have the more likely you are to reach your goals.

#6.  Greater Awareness.
When you keep your vision board in a place where it will be seen several times a day it keeps you constantly aware of your goals. This constant reminder will keep you more focused and more likely to accomplish the goals on your board. This is what a map or GPS does for us when we are driving. It is what a vision board does for us while we are dreaming!

#5.  Accountability.
A vision board is a consistent reminder of what you said you wanted. We all need accountability in our lives and a vision board is one more accountability partner. Sure it will not verbally talk, but if you keep it where you will see it several times a day it will speak to you…if you listen! Plus, other people in your home will see it and ask about it. When they do, you want to be able to confidently tell them what you have accomplished.

#4.  Clarity.
The process of developing a vision board will help you get clear on your goals. First, you must simply decide what goals you want to reach. Then go through the vision board making process.

As you seek out the picture, quotes, symbols, etc. to help you visualize your goals it gives you more clarity. As you look at those pictures and quotes daily your goals become clearer. Also, the steps to achieve those goals become clearer as well.

#3.  Increases Success.
Simply stated, you are more likely to accomplish your goals with a vision board. Again, because of the everyday reminder, it helps you to move in the direction of your goals. It is not magical, as some have stated, but it is powerful in moving you toward what you constantly see. They are so effective that many businesses have started using them.

According to Eilene Zimmerman, a writer from Forbes said that TD Bank has surveyed more than 1100 people and 500 small business owners nationwide. And the survey discovered that those who created a vision board that relates to their goals are almost twice more confident they will achieve their goals than those who do not. And the survey also showed that 82% of the small business owners that used a vision board reported that they have accomplished more than half of the goals they included on that board. (Full article found here.)

The success of using vision boards is valid. When the mind has a consistent picture of your future, it works harder to create it. The reason most goals are not accomplished is not that we can’t do it, but because we do not keep the picture in our head.

#2.  Focus.
In my book, GOALS: Godly Objectives Assuring Lasting Significance, I write “Genius has been described as the ‘ability to focus on one thing at a time.’” Where focus goes, energy flows. Without focus, you are very unlikely to accomplish your goals. Almost any significant accomplishment has had intensive focus.

If you struggle with focus a vision board will greatly improve your focus. It creates a stronger visual which will make focus more natural. When focus becomes easy and more natural, you are much more likely to do it. Remember, where focus goes, energy flows.

So, what is the NUMBER ONE reason to create a vision board in preparation for 2018…… (drum roll please…..)

#1. IT IS FUN!
It is just plain fun! It is fun to get together with other dreamers, believers, and achievers. It is fun to dream about the possibilities of 2018. It is fun to find that one special picture or quote that represents your dream.

It is fun to be creative like a kid again. It is fun to create, color, glue, draw, and paste with purpose and meaning!

The environment is fun! Everyone is sharing with one another and supporting each other. Most importantly it is fun to watch how you accomplish new goals through the year and you get to circle that goal on your vision board and celebrate…Have a party!!!

My family and I love doing vision boards. They keep us on task. And they make our upcoming year the best it can be!

When will you be doing your vision board?

Are you within a few hours of London, KY?  I’m hosting a Vision Board Party Friday, December 8th.  Very limited seating. Click here for more details.

What To Do With Obstacles

One of the important aspects of achieving our goals is often overlooked. That aspect is…. the obstacles in our way. What role do obstacles play in our journey to achieve our goals?

Obstacles, when looked at correctly, can often help us reach our goals.  “We also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.  And hope does not disappoint us.”  (Romans 5:3-5, NIV).  I think you would agree that having hope definitely helps us achieve those goals.  And what produces hope?  Character!  “The noble man makes noble plans, and by noble deeds he stands.” (Isaiah 32:8, NIV).  Noble means of outstanding character.  And what produces character?  Perseverance.  Perseverance is the ability to continue on after the excitement is over.  Perseverance is being committed no matter what.  And what produces perseverance?  Suffering.  Suffering is what the obstacles in your way often cause.

Now you have to ask yourself this question… “What am I going to do about it?  Am I going to let this obstacle kill my chances of achieving this goal or will it produce in me perseverance, character, and hope?”  The latter choice will “not disappoint us” while the former choice will cause us some level of disappointment for the rest of our lives.

BIRDS AND AIR

Have you ever stopped to think that air is the only obstacle that a bird in flight typically faces?  Yet without the air, the bird falls to the ground instantly?  Often times it is the same way with our obstacles.  So, do not bad-mouth your obstacles too quickly.  They just might be the only thing keeping you going.

Keep in mind you do not want to focus too heavily on your obstacles.  John Maxwell says, “Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goals.”  Do not let your obstacles take your eyes off your goals.  Instead, see them for what they are: stepping stones toward your goals.  Think about it, it is much easier to climb a rough mountain than it is a smooth one because the roughness provides the footholds.  That is what obstacles provide on your journey toward your goals.

We must identify those obstacles that are keeping us from reaching our goals. We must identify at least one action step for each obstacle. When we put those action steps into place we are on our way to achieving our goals.  Need some help?

I bring to the table a set of professional skills to help you identify what you really want in life, design action plans to reach those goals and get those things accomplished.

I offer one FREE 45-55 minute coaching session, done over the phone at a time that is convenient for you.  In this short call, we will work together to:

What My Mother-In-Law Did To Me In 2017

Last Christmas, my wonderful mother-in-law got me an excellent Christmas gift. She usually gets me good gifts anyway. I love flashlights and it seems like she gets me a new one every year. I love peanuts and she typically gets me a large container of Virginia Diner gourmet peanuts. Wow! My mouth is watering just thinking about it! I am glad Christmas will be here soon.

However, with all the great Christmas gifts my mother-in-law has ever gotten me, last year she topped them all! You guys know I am a personal development junkie. Last year she got me…The brand new…Tony Robbins “Ultimate Edge: A 3-Part System for Creating an Extraordinary Life in any Environment”!

It came with 26 CD’s of Tony Robbins’ teaching as well as 2 DVD’s and an additional 5 CD’s from his audio magazine, “Powertalk.” This is over 40 hours of Tony Robbins teachings and I have listened to all of the core 26 CD’s eight times over the course of 2017. “Thank you, my dearest mother-in-law. I can’t wait to see what you get me this year for Christmas. I have been a very, good boy!”

Anyway, one of the CD’s included in the “Ultimate Edge” is called “Daily Magic.” It is a CD made to use in the mornings to get your day off to a great start. One section of the “Daily Magic” CD is entitled “Get Grateful.”

The “Get Grateful” section is all about having an attitude of gratitude. During this time I reflect and I thank God for those things in my life that I often times take for granted. I thank God for:

My wife
My kids
Salvation
His grace
His forgiveness
His love
My health
That I get to do what I love
And a plethora of other things I am thankful for.

This helps me be aware of how blessed I really am. There is an old hymn titled, “Count Your Blessings” and this is exactly what I have done on almost a daily basis over the past year. It has helped to change my life.

When we start off the day with a grateful attitude, the rest of the day goes better. How can I complain right after I have thanked God for so many things that are right in my life? Having an attitude of gratitude can make the rest of the day so much better.

It is also healthier. Being grateful relieves stress and helps us feel more relaxed. When we thank God for our health, then we will have more health to be thankful for.

If you want to focus on the negatives of life, you will find them. If you want to focus on the positives of life, you will find them. You will typically find what you are looking for.

The more you complain, the more you will have to complain about. The more you are grateful, the more you will have to be grateful about. We tend to attract what we focus on.

As we approach Thanksgiving, I would encourage you to make Thanksgiving more than an annual celebration. Make it a daily habit. I made that change at the beginning of 2017 and I intend to continue that tradition in 2018. It has made all the difference…Perhaps it is the road less traveled.

In 2017, my mother-in-law made me a more grateful person making me more positive, healthy and focused.  Thanks!

What are you thankful for?

Using The Power of Focused Attention to Create Genius

In my last blog, we looked at writing out your “Dream List” or what some people call their “Be, Do, Have List.” If you have not read that blog you can go to it here.

Now, it is time to choose one focus goal from your “Be, Do, Have” or dream list.  You are no longer in the brainstorming stage so pick one that you really want to work on, one that stirs up enough passion in you that you are not going to give up when it gets difficult, because it will get difficult.  If it were easy, you probably would have already reached it.

FOCUS GOAL

Pick your goal to focus on (focus goal) and write it down.

After you write it down, look at it and see if you can make it any more specific.  For instance, instead of saying, “I want to lose weight.” Say “I want to lose _____ pounds.”  How much weight do you want to lose?  How much more money do you want?  What kind of new car do you want?  How much more reading do you want to do?  Make it as specific as possible before you go any further.

It is even better if you write it in the present tense. So, instead of saying “I want to lose ______ pounds.” Write it this way: “I weigh ______.” Our brains help us create what we see as a reality.

Two clarifying questions about your focus goal:

Question 1: What is the purpose of reaching this goal?

Now that you have made your goal clear and specific, let’s get clear about what this goal will do for you.  Ask yourself this question:  What is the purpose of reaching this goal?  In other words, what can this goal do for me?  How will my life be different after reaching this goal?  Will reaching this goal make my life better or worse? What is the purpose of reaching this goal?  The reason you must ask this question is that first, there is no reason to strive for a goal that has no purpose.  Second, it helps you focus on the benefits of the goal which is a motivator for you.  There will be times when you feel like giving up.  If, during those times, you make the effort to focus on the benefit of the goal rather than the trouble of getting there, it will often motivate you to keep going.

Question 2: Will this goal help me reach my purpose?

The second question you need to ask yourself is “Will this goal help me reach my purpose?”  Every focus goal must help you reach your purpose in some way.  If it does not, then it cannot be one of your focus goals.  Your life purpose is your ultimate focus.  So, if your focus goal does not move you in that direction then your whole life is out of focus which means it is not a “focus” goal.  Did that make sense?  I hope so.

Your whole life is about following your God-given purpose.  Any goal that does not move you in that direction does not need to be a focus goal.  You can still have it on your “Be, Do, Have” or dream list and you can still reach and accomplish this goal (as long as it does not take you away from fulfilling your life purpose) but it just does not deserve your focused attention.

Once you have run your focus goal through the focus goal filter you are ready to give it your focused attention. Remember, genius has been described as the “ability to focus on one thing at a time.” Do not try to have a whole list of focus goals. Pick one you can give all of your attention.

Organized Dreaming – 5 Real Steps to Turn Your Dreams Into Reality

When I first got into personal development material, 20 years ago, I got frustrated with all the numerous steps that each author or speaker would teach. I decided I would take all the audios and books on goals and try to find the few characteristics that they all had in common. Then, I did a Bible study on goals. I came up with five simple steps to achieving your goals…Sort of…

This is what I call…Organized Dreaming!

Before we get into the five steps of goal achievement, we need to come up with our “Be, Do, Have” lists.  Some people call it their “dream list.”  It does not matter what you call it as long as you make one.  I offer these FREE worksheets on my website or make your own.  Here is how it works.

bedohave2

Get three sheets of paper.  At the top of the first page write “Be”, on the top of the second, write “Do” and on top of the third, write “Have.”  Then go back to the page labeled “Be” and begin to write down everything you want to “be.”  I mean everything!  Do not hold anything back, just let your imagination run wild.  This is a brainstorming exercise so there are no wrong answers.  Write down the crazy, the mundane; the big, the little; the simple, the far-fetched; the ordinary, the extraordinary… write it all!

When you can no longer think of anything to write on your “Be” list, then go to your “Do” list and write down everything you want to “do.”  Then go to your “Have” list and write down everything you want to “have.”  Remember, there are no wrong answers so let your imagination run wild.  Some of your answers will be comical and others will be inspiring… all because of your imagination, and remember, the most powerful nation in the world is… Imagination!

Once you have finished doing all three pages, keep those with you for at least 24 – 48 hours so that when you get another idea you can quickly write it down before you forget it.  Continue to let your imagination run wild. Write down even the silly stuff, until you just can’t think of anything else you would like to be, do, or have.  Remember, you can always go back and add to this list for the rest of your life.  As a matter of fact, I encourage you to do so.

focus-mattersNow it is time to pick a focus goal! Out of your three lists of goals, pick one from each list.  If you could only keep one, this is the one you would choose. This should leave you with three goals, one from each list. Now, out of the three selected, pick one goal. Once you pick one goal from your “Be, Do, Have” list (or dream list), you are ready to go through the goals program which includes these five steps:

G.O.A.L.S.

  1. Goal: Write down your focus goal.
  2. Obstacles: What is keeping you from reaching this goal?
  3. Action Steps: How do I overcome each obstacle?
  4. Little Bit O’ Help: Who and what is going to help me?
  5. Set a Date: A goal without a date is not really a goal.

That is it! 5 simple steps to achieving your goals. Five simple steps to making your dreams come true!  Now what?

I bring to the table a set of professional skills to help you identify what you really want in life,  design action plans to reach those goals and get those things accomplished.

I offer one FREE 45-55 minute coaching session, done over the phone at a time that is convenient for you.  In this short call, we will work together to:

I Can Only Imagine – The Song You Know The Story You Don’t – a Review

mckaysbooks

Last week my wife and I were invited to a special showing of the movie, “I Can Only Imagine” in Knoxville, Tennessee.  So, I took her out to a really nice restaurant… Steak & Shake. We used the opportunity to go on a really nice date. In addition to the movie, we went to the very prestigious…McKay’s Used Bookstore!

I know, I know, I am a hopeless romantic.

Anyway, the movie was absolutely fabulous! It is one of the best Christian movies I have ever watched. It covers the life of Bart Millard, the lead singer for the Christian singing group Mercy Me, and gives the background of the story behind the song “I Can Only Imagine”.

Three themes are played out in this movie:
– forgiveness
– redemption
– following your dreams

Bart’s life reflects all three of these, not in a cheesy – someone says a prayer and everything becomes great- kind of way but in a real way that most, if not all, of those who watch, would be able to identify.

Forgiveness is shown in an authentic way in this movie.  Forgiveness is often times a struggle and this movie portrays that side of forgiveness well. However, ultimately it is a core value of Christianity even when it is extremely uncomfortable.

Redemption and forgiveness go hand and hand in what Jesus did for us on the cross. No one is so far gone that Jesus cannot redeem them. Even the worst of the worst can find redemption.

Following your dreams is probably the main theme in this movie. Although, it is tightly connected to forgiveness and redemption. It shows Bart’s determination, fortitude, and enthusiasm for following his dream of becoming a professional Christian singer.

He fought through the struggles, heartache, and disappointment that almost always shows up on the journey to a big dream. At times he wanted to quit, but there was always something that kept him going, not only in his dream of becoming a professional Christian singer but other more meaningful dreams as well!

This movie comes out in theaters on March 16, 2018.

Share this information with your church, your friends, and all your social media contacts.

This is definitely a movie you will want to see!

Do You Want to Change the World With Me?

Back in August, in my blog titled, Well-Rounded People Have No Point, I made this statement: “Well-rounded people may be good people. I am not putting them down. They are contributors to their communities. They live stable lives. But intensely focused people…They change the world!” Someone commented that some intensely focused people have changed the world in a bad way.

I have to agree. Some people have changed the world in a bad way. Some people are intensely focused in the wrong direction. However, I would argue that is why we need intensely focused people to change the world in a positive way, people who are intensely focused in the RIGHT direction.

We need people who are so goal-oriented, and intensely focused, that they make this world a better place. They are driven to make the biggest positive impact they possibly can. We need some intensely focused people to change the world…for the better!

keep-calm-and-focus-your-goalsOf course, you have to set the right kind of goals for this to be true.  What do I mean by the “right kind of goals?”  Positive!  Noble!  Godly!  Do not set goals that take you in the wrong direction.  You do not want to set a goal to do anything illegal, immoral, rude or that causes pain to yourself or someone else.  In the Bible (Old Testament) the prophet Isaiah wrote “… the noble man makes noble plans, and by noble deeds, he stands.”  (Isaiah 32:8, NIV)

I also like the way The Message translation words it, “… those who are noble make plans, and stand for what is noble.”  (Isaiah 32:8, The Message).  As I look at that verse, it makes me think about goals.  First, the word noble means of outstanding character.  In other words, if you are a “noble man” or woman, then you are a person of outstanding character.  People of outstanding character make plans (or set goals) that reflect that character.  Then they take the action that is driven by their character in order to accomplish those goals.

Noble people set noble goals that create noble action.  If you are not a noble person, then your first goal should be to become a person of outstanding character.  Until you get that right, other goals will be harder, and oftentimes impossible, to accomplish.

The word “goals” truly does stand for Godly Objectives Assuring Lasting Significance.  Your objectives in attaining your goals must be godly.  If you are going in the direction God wants you to go then your goals must come from God.  God not only wants us to dream up big goals but I believe He actually implants them in our head and heart.  The only way that we can be assured lasting significance is to tap into those goals that God has given to each of us.  There is nothing any more significant than that.

Are you ready?  Are you ready to assure lasting significance through godly objectives?  Are you ready to make some simple changes of habit in order to create dramatic change in your life?

If you said “Yes!”, then here we go!!

Do You Want to be Happier, Healthier and Wealthier?

set-goalOn more than one occasion I have been asked, “You are always talking about setting goals and writing down your goals…What is the point?” I used to be surprised by this question but I have been asked so often, I now come to expect it.

The answer is, of course, that people who write down their goals, develop a plan of action and actually work the plan experience amazing results.

You may ask, “What are these ‘amazing results’ of going through a goals program?”  David G. Jensen, Chief Administrative Officer at the Crump Institute of Biological Imaging for the UCLA School of Medicine, did a study and found that those people who set goals and develop a plan of action to reach those goals:

  • Earn an average of $4,000 more per month
  • Are more enthusiastic
  • Are more satisfied with life and work
  • Have happier marriages
  • Have better health and
  • Better performance

Are those good enough results for you?  Is that enough to get you motivated?  Regardless of who you are, I would be willing to say there is at least one of those six benefits you would like to experience in your life.  As for me, I would like to have all six!

Tcoaching with the brain in mindhrough additional research, David Rock and Linda J. Page explain in their book, Coaching With The Brain In Mind, that people who set goals also “exhibit increased self-confidence… and suffer less stress and anxiety” (p. 146). The truth is that setting and achieving goals is a healthy way to live. When done correctly it reduces stress and makes us healthier, happier people.

What is your goal for today? This week? This month? This year? If you want to have less stress and more happiness, start simple.  Write down one goal.  If you message me that goal – you’re more likely to reach it.

Do You Want to Be A Genius?

One of my favorite places to eat is Cracker Barrel. I cannot remember there being a time that the Cracker Barrel restaurant did not exist. The town I grew up in is actually home to the eighth Cracker Barrel to ever open. It is not the first, but it is still pretty cool.

My wife and I both worked at Cracker Barrel when we were in college. We have fond memories of driving back to the Johnson Bible College campus after we got off work. And yes, even after working there, we still like their food.

peg-gameWe have carried on this tradition with our kids. They love to eat at Cracker Barrel as well. Plus, they love playing that triangle peg game.  You know, that game that determines how smart you are. According to that game, I am only one peg away from being a genius. Although, most of the time when I play, I actually leave three or four pegs, BUT one time, I only left two!!

Therefore, I am only one peg away from being a genius.  Cracker Barrell said so!

I guess Cracker Barrel’s definition of a genius may need some additional research to prove true. Maybe, just maybe, being a genius includes more than learning how to jump pegs on a triangle shaped piece of wood.

Dictionary definition of word genius

But what would really make a genius?

Genius has been described as the “ability to focus on one thing at a time.”  That is the purpose of having a goal.  Do you have goals?  Are they written down?  Have you worked through a goals program?

Actually going through a goals program will help you develop focus in your life in order to do more than you would have done on your own and to achieve results more quickly.

keep-calm-and-focus-your-goalsGoing through a goals program does take time and effort but the results are amazing.  A person who is successful has simply formed the habit of doing things that unsuccessful people will not do.

If you are going to get more out of life you gotta get up and do something.  Stop waiting for your “ship to come in!”  Your “ship” is out there but it is not coming in… you gotta get in a little row boat and row with all your heart to get out to it!  A goals program can help you do just that.

So, if you really want to become a genius learn how to set and take action toward a specific goal. Do not try to accomplish a whole list of goals. Pick one.

Because, even though getting Cracker Barrel’s triangle peg game down to one peg is pretty impressive, leaving one peg does not really define a genius, but perhaps, just perhaps, action toward one focus goal does.set-goal
