Motivated by Fear

Moses dealt with fear. Moses was asked by God to lead the nation of Israel out of slavery. He immediately began coming up with excuses why he could not do it.

However, through the conversation he had with God he was able to break through the fear and do what God asked him to do. Not without some great reluctance along the way, but he did what God asked him to do in spite of the fear.

No excuse is more important than following God into something big.

He trained Peter, molded and shaped Peter, and cared for him as one of his closest friends and Peter denies even knowing him. Why? Fear!

Yet Peter went on to do great things for Jesus. He was a leader in the early church that helped the church turn into a movement. He became a pillar of the Christian movement. History tells us that Peter actually lost his life because of his devout devotion to Jesus. Peter overcame his fear through action and love.

Fear can cripple us or it can motivate us. At one point it crippled Peter. But as he took action, that same fear motivated him.

When Mary was first told she would be the Mother of Jesus she was terrified. She was simply a teenager with her whole life ahead of her and then all the sudden she gets the responsibility of being the Mother of the Son of God, the very savior of the world. How is that for a sudden change of events? Yet she accepted the call that God had given her. She stepped up and stepped forward regardless of the fear she faced. She overcame her fear in obedience to God.

What Are God’s Promises to You For Overcoming Fear?

Yesterday I shared with you one action to take to overcome your fears: walking in faith. Today I will share with you the second step to overcoming your fears:

Standing on God’s promises.

There are many places in the Bible that emphasize God’s promises to those who follow him. I will look at three:

-Deuteronomy 31:6

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you” (NIV).

In the midst of your trial, pain, or your extreme discomfort in moving in the direction of your God-given dreams, always know that God “will never leave you nor forsake you.” Therefore we have no reason to “be afraid or terrified.” Because God is always with us, we can, with confidence, “be strong and courageous.”

– Hebrews 13:5-6Image result for hebrews 13:5-6

“God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’ So we can say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” (NIV).

Because God will never leave us or forsake us “we can say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” That is a reassuring place to be. If God is for us, who can be against us? Bust through that fear because you have the greatest power to ever exist in your corner.

– John 14:2-3

“In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am” (NIV).

In Hebrew culture often times a young man would propose to a lady by preparing a room at his father’s house. This is where they would take their bride, assuming she accepted the proposal, to live with him when they get married. In reality, Jesus is proposing to us in this passage. “In my Father’s house are many rooms… I am going there to prepare a place for you…I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”

Jesus loves us so much he would rather die than live without us. If you have accepted his proposal, you can definitely walk in confidence with a groom like that.

God, Save Us From Practical People

Do you know what the most repeated command in the Bible is?

“Fear not” or “Do not be afraid.”  Yet, often times, we are controlled and limited by fear.

I am amazed at how adults change the way they talk to young people as they grow older. When kids are very young we say, “You can be anything you want to be!” We encourage them to dream. We want them to reach for the stars!

However, as they become teenagers we began to say things like, “You need to be practical.” “You can’t always do what you want.” “No one in our family has ever done that.”practical people

God save us from practical people!

Give us people who encourage us to dream. Give us people who continue to tell us we can do whatever we set our minds to. Give us people who are not so controlled by their own fear that they want to control everyone around them as well.

“Fear not!” “Do not be afraid!” Keep moving forward in the face of self-doubt. God is bigger than our fears no matter how practical we are encouraged to be.

My friend, Daniel Matthews, has written a great book on overcoming your fears titled; Spear Your Fear: Five Simple Steps to Retrain Your Brain for Success. In it, he gives great advice on how to move forward in the face of fear. Daniel states, “To keep your fears and self-doubt from winning, find your higher purpose, have a single focus, and look beyond the result by developing process-based goals.”

I believe the Bible reflects the same sentiment in Isiah 32:8, “The noble man makes noble plans and by noble deeds, he stands.”

Develop a focused enthusiasm for what God wants you to accomplish. Then develop specific goals to accomplish that. Then, and this may be the most important factor, take action! Just simply taking action will help you overcome your fear.
