A Tribute to Mom

mom2With Mother’s Day in just two days, I got to thinking about the contribution Mom’s make to the world. I am under no illusion I can adequately explain the immeasurable influence of Mother’s on our world in just a short blog. However, I would like to honor the Mothers out there and thank you for what you have done for the world and specifically what my Mom has done for me.

Throughout history, moms have played a significant role in the course of events. Abraham Lincolmom.pngn once said, “God bless my mother. All that I am or ever hope to be I owe to her.” A Spanish proverb puts it this way, “An ounce of Mother is worth a pound of clergy.” Even the name of the first mother in this world, Eve, means; life-giving.

One of the ladies on the T.V. show “The Golden Girls” said, “It’s not easy being a mother. If it were, fathers would do it.” There is a whole lot of truth in that statement. I have also heard it said that, “if being a mother were easy it would not start out with something called labor.” Moms have a tough job, but for one am very thankful for the contributions of moms.
20160513_114850My mom has always been an encourager. When I was eighteen and considering leaving home (I was still in high school) it was the encouragement of my mom that kept me home until I finished high school. I am probably not fully aware of the amount of relationship damage that would have created between my dad and me. It was avoided because of my mom.

When I was asked to leave college because of my poor grades, it was the encouragement of my mom that convinced me to not give up. I went to the college and asked to be allowed back in under the condition I would improve my grades. They let me back in. I improved my grades and eventually graduated. I later went on to get my Master’s in Life Coaching graduating with a 4.0. None of that would have been possible without the encouragement from my mom._MG_9490

So, thank you, mom. Thank you to all the moms of the world. Thank you for being the ones who encourage us and inspire us to be more than we thought we could be. Thank you for being our positive voice in a negative world.

Thank you for being…MOM!

Jesus, Communication, Purpose, and Sex – 4 Secrets to a Great Marriage Relationship

lowres0What is the secret to a great marriage relationship? My wife and I have had our ups and downs over almost 17 years of marriage. Through it all, we have learned some valuable lessons to having a great marriage. We have had a whole lot of help along the way from marriage coaches, counselors, and mentors. They have all helped us to greatly improve our marriage relationships not to mention the many books, conferences, seminars, and retreats that have helped us as well. Through seventeen years of learning, failing, learning from failing and eventually experiencing some successes, here are what I consider the top four most important secrets of a great marriage.

  1. The first secret to a great marriage relationship is for both people to keep their eyes on Jesus. Jesus must be the focus. He is the most important factor of any great relationship.
  1. Good Communication. Open and honest communication going both ways. The better the communication, the better the relationship.4 sec

My wife and I attended a retreat in 2014, that dramatically helped us in both areas. We pray not only with each other every night (even nights when one of us is away) but for each other every night. We also learned a communication tool called “dialogue” (I describe this practice here) that has greatly improved our communication. Our prayer time and our “dialogue” has not only kept us focused on Jesus and communication it has helped us continue to grow and improve in both of those areas. Jesus and communication would defiantly be my top two most important aspects of a great marriage relationship.

  1. Having a shared purpose, values, and goals. This is another area where my wife and I have dramatically grown over the course of seventeen years. We have discovered that when we dream together we grow together.
  1. In my opinion, there is one more important secret to a great marriage…an extremely hot sex life! There, I said it. I know many of you were thinking it, so, I just went ahead and said it.4 secrets

Each couple may define a “hot sex life” differently. This may depend on what stage of your life or marriage you are in or even your health and many other factors. That is OK, as long as you and your spouse define it together. Keep in mind that “hot” is not necessarily determined by frequency. It is more determined by the love, passion, and even spirituality that is shared through the sexual relationship. Regardless of how you define it, an extremely hot sex life frequently makes for a great marriage relationship.

What are your secrets for a great marriage relationship?

An Atheist’s Journey to Faith: A Movie Review of “The Case for Christ”

case movieLast night I went with my church family to see the movie, “The Case for Christ.” I read the book several years ago and had been greatly anticipating seeing the movie since I heard they were making it. I was not disappointed.

Although it was not as good as the book (movies seldom are), it was well done and brought forth a great message. The movie is based on the life of Lee Strobel.  Lee was an atheist that decided to investigate the Christian faith, and specifically the resurrection of Jesus, after his wife became a Christian.

case for faithWanting desperately to prove his wife wrong, he set out on a journalistic investigation by meeting up with some of the top experts in the fields of science, psychology, medicine, philosophy, and yes, theology. Although the movie does not bring this out, Strobel’s investigation took approximately two years to conclude. As a top notch journalist for the Chicago Tribune who was also an atheist, all he was looking for were the facts to prove the Christian faith wrong.

The movie follows Strobel’s journey through this process to the point of his ultimate conclusion. One important moment in the movie is where Strobel had published a story about a man involved in a shooting before he had acquired all the facts. As a result, the man was convicted of the shooting and later badly beaten in prison. Strobel eventually apologized to the man for reporting on the incident before having all the facts. The man looks at Strobel and says, “You did not want to see all the facts.”

caseStrobel realizes that this man’s statement was not only true about the shooting, it was also true about the resurrection and the Christian faith. After gathering facts and investing for two years to disprove the resurrection and the claims of the Christian faith, Strobel comes to this conclusion; it would take more faith to remain an atheist than it would to become a Christian. (Again, the movie does not bring this out as strongly as the book does.)

If you have questions about the Christian faith and you enjoy movies I would encourage you to see “The Case For Christ”. If you enjoy reading and you have questions about the Christian faith, it would be even better to read the book of the same title.

What Makes You Tick and What Ticks You Off?

Appolonya & Daddy FavoriteOn December 20th, 2003, I was waiting for my first child to be born. Nothing else mattered that day except the birth of my daughter. This day would remain etched in my mind forever.

After they took my wife back to prep her for surgery I was sitting with my parents. I asked them,“As someone who has raised five kids, what parenting advice could you give me?”

My Dad looked at me and said, “Parent them according to their personality. That is where I went wrong with you. I thought I was raising a typical little boy, I did not realize I was raising a boy with the heart of a poet.” I will never forget that advice.

Have you ever noticed that some people are just weird? Some people are just so different from you they must be out of touch with reality, right? That is not how normal people act. But who determines what is normal?

Everybody is different. What makes you tick and what ticks you off is unique to you. We all have different personalities. Each one of should embrace how God has made us. If you think being you is tough you should try being someone else. God made you to be you!

However, each one of us can be grouped into one of four major personalities:

heart, body, soul, mindHearts are security seeking personalities. They make up about 40-50% of the world’s population. They focus on the past.

Bodies are thrill-seeking personalities. They make up about 30-40% of the world’s population. They focus on the now.

Souls are identity seeking personalities. They make up about 10-15% of the world’s population. They focus on the future.

Minds are knowledge seeking personalities. They make up about 5-10% of the world’s population. They see time in intervals.

Each one of these personalities has a different way they energize, prioritize, communicate and decision-make. Over the next four days, we will take a closer look at how each personality style energizes, prioritizes, communicates, and decision-makes.

What personality style do you think you are?  Comment below now and then at the end of the week after reviewing them in more detail, see if you were right!

God, Save Us From Practical People

Do you know what the most repeated command in the Bible is?

“Fear not” or “Do not be afraid.”  Yet, often times, we are controlled and limited by fear.

I am amazed at how adults change the way they talk to young people as they grow older. When kids are very young we say, “You can be anything you want to be!” We encourage them to dream. We want them to reach for the stars!

However, as they become teenagers we began to say things like, “You need to be practical.” “You can’t always do what you want.” “No one in our family has ever done that.”practical people

God save us from practical people!

Give us people who encourage us to dream. Give us people who continue to tell us we can do whatever we set our minds to. Give us people who are not so controlled by their own fear that they want to control everyone around them as well.

“Fear not!” “Do not be afraid!” Keep moving forward in the face of self-doubt. God is bigger than our fears no matter how practical we are encouraged to be.

My friend, Daniel Matthews, has written a great book on overcoming your fears titled; Spear Your Fear: Five Simple Steps to Retrain Your Brain for Success. In it, he gives great advice on how to move forward in the face of fear. Daniel states, “To keep your fears and self-doubt from winning, find your higher purpose, have a single focus, and look beyond the result by developing process-based goals.”

I believe the Bible reflects the same sentiment in Isiah 32:8, “The noble man makes noble plans and by noble deeds, he stands.”

Develop a focused enthusiasm for what God wants you to accomplish. Then develop specific goals to accomplish that. Then, and this may be the most important factor, take action! Just simply taking action will help you overcome your fear.
