Are You Going to Dream or Are You Going to Climb?

The number one characteristic of people who climb to their God-given potential is that they are action oriented. They may make mistakes along the way, but they make adjustments and keep moving forward.

green-lightsOften times we wait for everything to be just right before we take action. That is like waiting for all the traffic lights to turn green before you drive to your destination. Get in the car and drive. If you must temporally stop along the way, then stop for a short period and then go.

Sometimes I hear people talking about waiting on God. There are times we do need to wait when God has made it very plain that waiting is what we need to do. However, most of the time we are just trying to spiritualize our reluctance to take action. Most of the time when I hear people talking about waiting on God, I get this strong feeling that God is probably waiting on them.

Take action! You are only on this earth for a short period of time. Do not waste it by spending most of your time just waiting. Do something! Anything!! Just take action!!!

John Maxwell says, “What separates a developer of a successful dream from a mere daydreamer is committed action.” I strongly encourage you to dream, but then do something about that dream. Do not just dream for the sake of dreaming. Dream so you can change the world! That will only happen if you put the dream into practice by actually taking action.

Sure it is scary. That is the reason most people do not take action. You are different. You are not just a dreamer, you are a climber. You are not content to just dream about reaching your God-given potential. You are going to actually make the climb to achieving it!

not doneYou are the person who is willing to join the top 10% of people who invest in their personal growth and development. You do not stop there, you are a part of the 1% who actually put into action what you learn. You do not just read blogs, books, and go to seminars to learn. You do all that stuff and more to be the best version of you!

Take action! Whatever it is, do it!! Overcome the fear that stops most people in their tracks and become a part of the 1% that turn the world upside down!!!

What Are God’s Promises to You For Overcoming Fear?

Yesterday I shared with you one action to take to overcome your fears: walking in faith. Today I will share with you the second step to overcoming your fears:

Standing on God’s promises.

There are many places in the Bible that emphasize God’s promises to those who follow him. I will look at three:

-Deuteronomy 31:6

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you” (NIV).

In the midst of your trial, pain, or your extreme discomfort in moving in the direction of your God-given dreams, always know that God “will never leave you nor forsake you.” Therefore we have no reason to “be afraid or terrified.” Because God is always with us, we can, with confidence, “be strong and courageous.”

– Hebrews 13:5-6Image result for hebrews 13:5-6

“God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’ So we can say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” (NIV).

Because God will never leave us or forsake us “we can say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” That is a reassuring place to be. If God is for us, who can be against us? Bust through that fear because you have the greatest power to ever exist in your corner.

– John 14:2-3

“In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am” (NIV).

In Hebrew culture often times a young man would propose to a lady by preparing a room at his father’s house. This is where they would take their bride, assuming she accepted the proposal, to live with him when they get married. In reality, Jesus is proposing to us in this passage. “In my Father’s house are many rooms… I am going there to prepare a place for you…I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”

Jesus loves us so much he would rather die than live without us. If you have accepted his proposal, you can definitely walk in confidence with a groom like that.

God, Save Us From Practical People

Do you know what the most repeated command in the Bible is?

“Fear not” or “Do not be afraid.”  Yet, often times, we are controlled and limited by fear.

I am amazed at how adults change the way they talk to young people as they grow older. When kids are very young we say, “You can be anything you want to be!” We encourage them to dream. We want them to reach for the stars!

However, as they become teenagers we began to say things like, “You need to be practical.” “You can’t always do what you want.” “No one in our family has ever done that.”practical people

God save us from practical people!

Give us people who encourage us to dream. Give us people who continue to tell us we can do whatever we set our minds to. Give us people who are not so controlled by their own fear that they want to control everyone around them as well.

“Fear not!” “Do not be afraid!” Keep moving forward in the face of self-doubt. God is bigger than our fears no matter how practical we are encouraged to be.

My friend, Daniel Matthews, has written a great book on overcoming your fears titled; Spear Your Fear: Five Simple Steps to Retrain Your Brain for Success. In it, he gives great advice on how to move forward in the face of fear. Daniel states, “To keep your fears and self-doubt from winning, find your higher purpose, have a single focus, and look beyond the result by developing process-based goals.”

I believe the Bible reflects the same sentiment in Isiah 32:8, “The noble man makes noble plans and by noble deeds, he stands.”

Develop a focused enthusiasm for what God wants you to accomplish. Then develop specific goals to accomplish that. Then, and this may be the most important factor, take action! Just simply taking action will help you overcome your fear.

Follow Your God-Given Dreams

Helen Keller was once asked if there was anything she could think of that was worse than being blind.helen keller.png
John Maxwell defines vision as “a picture of the future that stirs up passion within you.” Do you have vision? Do you have a picture of your future that stirs up a passion within you? The best way to predict the future is to create it.

futureWhat do you believe God’s dream or vision for you may be? Through prayer, reflection, feedback from those who know you best, Bible reading, you can discover your passion. God created you for a reason, for a purpose, for a dream. God has a dream he wants to accomplish through you.

Are you up for the challenge? It will not be easy. It will not always be smooth, but it is where you will live your life to the fullest extent. If you want to climb to your God-given potential, you must discover what God’s dream is for you and then pursue it.

Bruce Wilkinson says, “If you do not follow your God-given dream something significantly important will not happen.”

Several years ago the Statler Brothers had a song called “The Class of ‘57” Some of the lyrics went like this:

class 1957Tommy’s selling used cars, Nancy’s fixing hair
Harvey runs a grocery store and Margaret doesn’t care
Jerry drives a truck for Sears and Charlotte’s on the make
And Paul sells life insurance and part-time real estate.

And the class of ’57 had its dreams
Oh, we all thought we’d change the world with our great works and deeds
Or maybe we just thought the world would change to fit our needs
The class of ’57 had its dreams.

Betty runs a trailer park, Jan sells Tupperware
Randy’s in an insane ward and Mary’s on welfare
Charlie took a job with Ford and Joe took Freddie’s wife
Charlotte took a millionaire and Freddie took his life.

And the class of ’57 had its dreams
But living life day to day is never like it seems
Things get complicated when you get past eighteen
But the class of ’57 had its dreams
Oh, the class of ’57 had its dreams.

dreams lostMost of the time we do not need to discover our dreams. We typically know what they are, we have just buried them somewhere inside our mind and soul where we do not see them anymore.

Pull them out! Re-discover why God put you on this planet. Do not let the realities of life steal your God-given dreams.

What are some of your God-given dreams?
