3 Simple Strategies to Deal With Discouragement

In your opinion, what is the biggest obstacle to people reaching their goals?

A couple of weeks ago I asked this question on Facebook. One of the top answers was: “the discouragement of other people.” David Wilkinson, in his book “The Dream Giver”, identifies four different types of people who discourage us from reaching our goals:

  • The Alarmist: They say, “It’s not safe!” They are motivated by fear and tends to exaggerate the risks.
  • The Traditionalist: They say, “It’s not the way we do it!” They do not like change. They often romanticize the past and they are motivated by custom and routine.
  • The Defeatist: They say, “It’s not possible!” They see problems everywhere. They are certain you cannot achieve your goal or dream.
  • The Antagonist: They say, “I won’t let you!” They use authority or intimidation to block your path. They come against you because they are afraid they will lose money or control. Or they may just not like you or what you are doing. (p. 104).

These can be family, friends, co-workers, bosses, neighbors, and sometimes, complete strangers. For some reason, some people just do not want you to follow your dreams or achieve your goals. So, what do you do about it? I am glad you asked. Here are three suggestions:

  1. Change who you spend most of your time with.

We are typically the average of the five people we spend the most time with. Be intentional about who you are around most of the time. You may not be able to completely control who you are around, but you can to some extent.

Hang around with people who dream and are goal oriented. Look for people to dream with you. Hang around people who support you in your enthusiastic journey toward your God-given potential.

  1. Change your self-talk.

Shad Helmstetter says, “by the time a person is 18 years old they have heard ‘no’ or ‘you can’t do that’ over 148,000 times.” If you hear “no” or “you can’t do that” over 148,000 times you will begin to believe it. Those messages that have been programmed into our minds continue to speak to us.

We must change that negative self-talk into positive self-talk. We must reprogram our minds. The best way to do that is to be more intentional about positive self-talk instead of just using negative self-talk by default.

As we make that change, it will change our thoughts, which will change our beliefs, which will change our feelings, which will change our actions, which will change our results. We cannot always change what other people tell us, but we can change what we tell ourselves.

  1. Hire a coach.

A coach helps you overcome the obstacles in your way so you can better and more quickly achieve your goals. Thomas Leonard put it this way, “a coach helps people set goals, do more than they would have done on their own, and improve focus as to produce results more quickly.” When you are dealing with the discouragement of others, a coach can help you put things in perspective instead of being sidetracked by other people’s negativity.

Here are some statistics on coaching:

  • 80% of people who receive coaching report increased self-confidence,
  • 70% benefit from improved work performance, relationships, and more effective communication skills
  • 86% of companies report that they recouped their investment on coaching and more (source: ICF 2009).

Most coaches offer one FREE introductory session. I would encourage you to find three coaches that look like they may be a good fit for you and schedule a FREE session with each one. Then choose one to work with so you can work past the negative input of other people. A good coach will always be an encourager that helps you stretch beyond your comfort zone. You can sign-up for a FREE coaching session with me here.

Getting past those negative influences is not an easy task. It takes finding more positive people to be around, changing your self-talk, and working with an encouraging coach to break through the negativity into the person God has created you to be. God has not called you to be a part of the mediocre, he has called you to greatness!

Busting Through Roadblocks to Your God-Given Potential

roadblocks2It was 20 years ago when I bought my first Zig Ziglar cassette tape at a local bookstore in Corbin, Kentucky. That tape sparked something in me that has grown for the past 20 years. It sparked the desire to climb to my God-given potential.

I had read and listened to some material before that time. I had read some books by John Maxwell (John Maxwell is where I first heard of Zig Ziglar), I had read “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” by Steven Covey, and I frequently checked out cassette tapes from Johnson Bible College’s library so I could listen to them while I traveled to and from the weekend ministry I served during my college years. The seed of personal growth and development was already planted before I bought that Zig Ziglar cassette. But it was that cassette that sparked a flame that would glow for the next 20 years.

roadblockbuster1I continue to feed my mind with audio programs and books that help me get from where I am to where I want to be. Not only that, but I now devote my life to doing for others what Zig Ziglar, John Maxwell, Dave Ramsey, and many others have done for me through their books, audio programs, and live events. I do all I can to climb to my God-given potential and to help others climb to their God-given potential.

What is your spark? What is it that sparks such an intense passion in you that you can see yourself doing it for the next 20 years or even the rest of your life? What is it that you love to experience so much that you must help others experience the same thing? What is it that God has put in your heart and soul that it is your vehicle for climbing to your God-given potential?

roadblockbuster2Unfortunately, we experience roadblocks along the way that try to stop us from reaching our God-given potential. Over the next four blogs, I will address four of these roadblocks and prescribe a blockbuster for each one.

I hope you will journey with me this week as we look at four potential roadblocks and how to bust through each one of them. I desire to climb to my God-given potential and I have the same desire for you. Let’s go on this journey together!

Do You Have a Good, Positive, Can-Do Attitude?

attitudeMany people know what altitude of an airplane refers to: the measurement of how high a plane is above the ground or sea level. However, it is not as commonly known what the attitude of an airplane refers to. The attitude of an airplane is the tilt of the plane in relation to the wind and the ground.

The attitude of the plane determines the altitude of the plane. The determination of how high or low a plane may be is the attitude of the plane. The attitude of the plane is immensely important, especially during takeoff and landing.

If the attitude of the plane is not right as it lands on the runway it may be an extremely rough landing. If the attitude is bad enough it could mean injury or even death. When a plane has the right attitude it can climb to great heights, create a peaceful situation, and even save lives!

attitude2.jpgThe same is true for us. Our attitude determines our altitude. Our attitude determines where and how high we go in life. As you climb to your God-given potential remember the significance of your attitude.  It determines how high you can climb, the peacefulness in your life, and even the ability to help avoid tragedy.

If your attitude is bad, it could create a very rough life just like it creates a very rough landing for a plane. Then, when our life becomes a wreck, because of our attitude, we want to blame everyone else but ourselves. When in reality, if we had the right attitude our journey would have been much smoother.

This is not to say that having a good, positive, can-do attitude will eliminate all of our attitude3.jpgproblems. We will still have problems, but with the right attitude, we can better handle those problems. When a plane experiences turbulence, often they will adjust their attitude to climb to a higher altitude where they can experience a smoother ride.

Check your attitude today. When you face turbulence (as we all will from time to time) how can you adjust your attitude in a way to take the high road where there will be less turbulence? Most importantly, what kind of attitude do you need to better climb to your God-given potential?

God Has A General Purpose For You

find your purposeIn our last blog, we discussed our first purpose – to know, love, and follow Jesus. We must start there. “It is in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for” (Ephesians 1:11, The Message). We cannot fully understand and fulfill our specific purpose in life until we fulfill our first purpose, which is to know, love, and follow Jesus.

Today we will look at our general purpose. Not only does everyone have a specific purpose that is unique to each individual, we also have a general purpose as humans. This purpose is not unique to individuals. It is universal for all mankind.

I get some of the wording and format below from Rick Warren. I believe he has explained the general purpose for all of us better than anyone I know, even me. I have used his words and turned them into something that makes them a little easier to remember. I call it three ships, a try (pronounced tree), and an ism.

Our general purpose, the purpose that God has for all of us and wants all of us to do and fulfill, is three ships, a try (tree) and an ism. I first discovered this in Rick Warrens’ book, The Purpose Driven Church (1995). He later wrote about the same subject in The Purpose Driven Life (2002).

purpose4Ship 1 – Worship
God wants all of us to worship him. This is not for a chosen few. It is for everyone. Loving God with everything you have and everything you are is our worship. It includes worshipping him with other followers of Jesus on Sunday morning but it also goes beyond that as well. Worshipping God is not an event.  It is a lifestyle.

Ship 2 – Fellowship
God wants all of us to have deep, meaningful relationships with other followers of Jesus. This is another purpose for the church. When we are not actively involved with a church, we are negatively affecting our relationships with other followers of Jesus. Again, it goes deeper than just meeting with other followers of Jesus on Sunday morning or having a fellowship meal together. It is about building deep, meaningful relationships with them. We need each other.

Ship 3 – Discipleship
Discipleship simply means growing to become more like Jesus. God wants all of us to grow in that relationship with him. This is another reason we must be an active part of a church body.

Try (Tree) – Ministry
God wants all of us to be involved in ministry. Some may be in paid ministry and others in volunteer ministry, but we all have a ministry to fulfill. Ministry is serving God by serving other people. Find out how you can best use your strengths, gifts, and passions to serve God.

Ism – Evangelism
Evangelism is simply telling those who do not know Jesus about Jesus. God wants all of us to do evangelism. Be ready to share your story of what your life was like before you decided to follow Jesus, why you decided to follow Jesus, and how your life has changed since you made that decision. This is not just for paid staff members of a church. It is for everyone who has made the decision to follow Jesus.

Our general purpose is three ships, a try (tree) and an ism. Before you can fulfill this purpose you must fulfill your first purpose. And before you can adequately fulfill your specific purpose you must fulfill your first and general purpose. In the next blog, we will look in more detail at our specific purpose.

Is Jesus Your Leader?

Ephesians 1:11-12, says;
It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone (The Message).

purpose3The only way we can fully discover our specific purpose in life is to be in Christ. Our first purpose is to come to know, love, and follow Jesus. It is only in him “that we find out who we are and what we are living for.”

The first purpose of our lives is making Jesus the forgiver and leader of our life. That is how we discover our specific purpose and it is through Jesus that our purpose is given the most meaning and significance. When Jesus becomes the leader of our life, he leads us in the path that God created for us, our purpose. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10, NIV).

If you have not made that decision, I would encourage you to do so. Put your trust in Jesus. Change your direction to follow Jesus’ lead. Make a conscious decision to make Jesus the forgiver and leader of your life. Make that commitment solid by being baptized, and at this point, God’s Holy Spirit will help you live the way God designed you to live. This is the most important decision you will ever make in your life and it will determine how well you live out your purpose in this life.

purpose2

As we look at the different levels of purpose over the next two blogs, realize that this step must take place first. As a follower of Jesus, I must say that my life has a level of meaning and purpose it would not have had I never made this decision. Our first purpose in life is to know, love, and follow Jesus.

Why Are You Here?

purposeLaurie Beth Jones once asked a group of troubled teens, “Who are you?” After a few answers, she asked, “What are your biggest fears?” She got a few more answers and then she asked, “If you knew you could not fail and money was not an issue, what would you do?”

I know you are eager to find out what those troubled teens answered, but I think it would be more important to answer those questions for yourself. Before you read on, try answering those three questions for yourself. Go ahead, do it…I am watching you 🙂

Hopefully, you answered those three questions from the first paragraph. If you did not go do it now. If you did, think about those in connection with your life purpose.

So often we do not fulfill or even discover our purpose in life because we do not understand ourselves, we allow fears and limiting beliefs to hold us back, or we have simply not thought about what we would do without all those limitations.

Genesis 5:6-27, is a list of different people over the course of about six generations. Here is the typical format of that passage: “______ had lived ___ years, he became the father of _____. And after he became the father of _____, he lived ___ years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, he lived ___ years, and then he died.” So, if this was written about me it would read something like this: “Tommy had lived 31 years, he became the father of Appolonya. And after he became the father of Appolonya, Tommy lived 69 years and had another child. Altogether, Tommy lived 100 years, and then he died.” (Yes, I do plan on living 100 years. You are invited to my 100th birthday party if you can make it.)

Is not life more than just living, dying, and having kids? Is this it? Just survive and reproduce? I believe there is more. Our purpose is bigger than just living, dying, and having kids. Our God-given purpose is to make an eternal difference in people’s lives and to make this world a better place in the process.

Of everyone who goes to college 30% never finish. Of those who do finish 80% end up in a career unrelated to their field of study. How great would it be if we had some indication of our purpose in life before we invested in our education?

Whats-Your-Purpose1

What is your purpose? What difference would knowing your purpose make in your life? God has put each one of us on this world for a reason, what is yours?

Over the next few blogs this week we will discover the three levels of purpose.

Step 4 to Finding Real Happiness: A Deep Spiritual Connection to God

Over the past few blogs, we have looked at how to find real happiness and joy. To read those blogs please click the links below:

Step One: If You Want to Find True Happiness, You Must Do Something

God Did Not Create Us to be Alone/Step 2: Find Someone

Step Three to Finding Real Happiness: Feed Your Mind

Today we will look at the fourth and final step: connect spiritually. The ultimate happiness in life is not discovered until we connect spiritually. The first part of a spiritual connection is to come to know and love Jesus. However, there is more to deeper spiritual connection than just knowing you will go to heaven when you die. There are several practices to help you grow into a deeper spiritual connection with God. There are four that are foundational to spiritual growth and connection.

connection2Bible
Spiritual connection is limited at best if we are not reading the Bible. The Bible gives us direction, connection, and affection. The Bible is the primary way God speaks to us. He wants you to hear his voice, listen to him. The Bible is not so much a rule book as it is a love letter from God. Open it up and find out how much God loves you.

connection1

Prayer
The Bible is the primary way God speaks to us, prayer is the primary way we speak to God. Reading the Bible and prayer is how we have conversations with God. No relationship can grow without authentic communication. If our spiritual connection, our relationship with God, is going to grow, we must have authentic communication with him through reading the Bible and praying to him.

connection

Fellowship
If we are going to grow in our spiritual connection, we must grow in our connection with other people who desire to grow in their spiritual connection. That sentence may be worth reading again. Jesus established the church, which is our primary place for getting this type of connection. I know, I know, some of you are saying “the church is full of hypocrites and they have lost the meaning of true spirituality”, and there may be some truth to that. However, we often do not hear the positive side of the church. Churches really are most responsible for the positive change that has taken place throughout history. We have done some things very wrong, but we have done much more right. If you want more input on that subject please read “An Open Letter to the Church”.

The church is what Jesus established for his followers to come together for a deeper spiritual connection with him. With all its faults it is still God’s chosen vessel for deep, spiritual relationships. If we want to grow in our relationship with God we must grow in our relationship with other followers of Jesus.

Giving
If we are to grow in our spiritual connection with the ultimate giver…God…We must become givers ourselves. Giving can be our time, talents or treasures. Better yet, it should be all three. One of the best ways to find real happiness is to become a giver. Psychologist Alfred Adler put it this way, “We could be cured of depression in only fourteen days if every day we would try to do something good for somebody else.”

connection3

I encourage you to schedule time to read your Bible. If you do not understand it then look for a different translation that is easier to understand. Here are some of my favorites: New International Version, The Message, and The Voice. If you do not like reading then listen to it. You can get it on CD or even look it up online for free.

Set aside a time of prayer. However, do not limit your prayer time to just scheduled times. Be open to spontaneous prayers as well. My wife and I have scheduled times when we talk, but we are not limited to those times. We spontaneously talk throughout the day as well. It is the same way with God.

If you are not already part of a church then I encourage you to find one. Please do not just attend, get involved. If you can find one that has a strong small groups environment it may help your connection even better.

Look for opportunities to give of your time, talents, and treasures. Give to your church, give to your community, give to your favorite cause, just be a giver. To some extent the more you give, the happier you will be.

Step Three to Finding Real Happiness: Feed Your Mind

garbage.jpgWhat if I came into your house with a pile of garbage and dumped it all out on your living room floor? What would you do? You may call the police or you may take matters into your own hands and begin pounding some sense into me.  You would at least tell me to “Clean it up.” Depending on how quickly I responded to your demand, you may revert to one of the other two options.

The garbage on your living room floor can be cleaned up with some focused attention. But what about the garbage we pour into our minds on a daily basis? That is not so easily cleaned up. Be careful what goes into your mind.

Over the last two blogs, we have looked at two steps to finding real happiness: Step one is do something and step two is find someone. Today we will look at step three…feed your mind!

garbage 4Most people do not read a single non-fiction book after they finish school. We fill our minds with junk on the radio, T.V., the internet, and numerous other sources; but we do not take the time to fill our minds with good, positive, productive information. If we want to find real happiness, we must become life-long learners.

How many of you believe everything you read in the Bible? Now, how many of you believe everything you read on the internet? Now, I ask you, how many of you spend more time reading what you don’t believe than what you do believe?

I would encourage you to become life-long learners. Read or listen to something that will help you grow and move in the direction of your goals. If you do not have any goals, then maybe you could start with reading GOALS: Godly Objective Assuring Lasting Significance.

garbage 2

Learn more about whatever it is you do in life. If you are married, read or listen to some books on marriage (The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman) or go to a marriage conference. If you are a parent, read or listen something on parenting (Scream-Free Parenting by Hal Edward Runkel) or go to a parenting class or conference. If you want to grow spiritually, read or listen to something on spiritual growth (The Bible) or go to church. Wherever you are in life or whatever you are doing, learn more about it so you can get better.

I am a speaker and a life coach who helps people climb to their God-given potential. You know what I read and listen to the most? Books and audios on speaking, coaching, and reaching my God-given potential. Those things not only feed my mind, they feed my soul.

If you want to find real happiness, I encourage you to do something, find someone, and feed your mind. Begin or continue your lifelong quest for learning. You may have finished your formal schooling, but if you want to find real happiness and joy, you must never finish your education.

What is the next book you are going to read? Class you are going to take? Audio you are going to listen to? Whatever it is, write it down (message it to me below if you want) and then take action! Buy it, pick it up, press play, whatever you need to do please do it now!

God Did Not Create Us to be Alone / Step 2: Find Someone

In the last blog, we looked at one step to finding real happiness…Do Something! Nolan Bushnell, the founder of Atari, says, “Everyone who has ever taken a shower has an idea. It’s the person who gets out of the shower, dries off and does something about it who makes a difference.” You can read that blog here.

Step two is to find someone. Find someone to share life with. This may be a romantic relationship, but it does not have to be. It can be a close friend, a small group from your church, a family member, or anybody. Rick Warren says, “We discover our roles in life through relationships.” God did not create us to be alone. Even introverts need relationships. Maybe not as many, but we still need them.

someone.jpg

We can’t always put our hand on the right book, audio, or magazine, but we can always put our hand on the phone to call someone. Charlie “Tremendous” Jones says, “You are the same person today that you will be five years from now except for the people you meet and the books you read.” The right relationships take us places we would not otherwise get to go.

Hope through relationships.jpg

Happiness and joy tend to be more abundant when we focus our attention on others. The odd thing about happiness is the more we try to pursue happiness, the harder it is to find. The more we try to give happiness, the more abundant it will be in our lives. There are many virtues and values, but here is the greatest: one person caring for another.

happy 4We cannot help but feel happy when we care for someone else. When we pour our lives into the lives of other people, it brings a level of euphoria that no self-indulgence could ever reach. Remember, this is a principle and not a tactic. In other words, we cannot help someone for the express purpose of making ourselves happy. Only when we help other people expecting nothing in return will we receive the greatest return.

So, reach out to someone today. Build on an already existing relationship or simply develop a new one. Who will you reach out to today? Write it down and do it now. Remember the first step? Do something! Here is your opportunity to do something now…Find someone!
