3 Easy Steps to Change Your Habits

Recently a fellow enthusiast asked me this question:

“From what I read and understand, change/resolutions, etc., come from changing habits. How does one really do that?? If I want to exercise more, eat healthier things, what habit am I forming and HOW?”

Here is my answer:

Changing our habits is not easy. Our mind gets comfortable acting in a certain way and when we change the routine, our minds will often resist. I do not know your unique situation. However, here are some general tips:

  1. Focus on the results. For any goal you have ask yourself “What is the purpose of reaching this goal?” write that down and read it frequently. It will keep you motivated and focused.
  2. Make it a must. We typically do not do what we feel like we “should” do. However, we almost always do what we feel we “”must.” For example, if we say, “I should start running.” We probably will not. However, if we “must” run somewhere to save the life of someone we love, we will find a way to do it.
  3. Visualize your goals. Getting a clear picture of your goals in your mind or even an actual picture you will see every day will keep you motivated and focused. I am doing a live event in Lexington, KY. on January 19, specifically covering this topic.

This is a quick answer, but hopefully it will help get you started.  Here is the link to the podcast of the radio show “Hope Is Here” hosted by Greg Horn. I was his guest on January 1-5. We discussed goal getting and overcoming discouragement. Listen to the show this week. The clips are only about 15 minutes each. If you have further questions please let me know. I can even do a free coaching call with you if you would like to dig deeper into changing your habits. Thanks for the question.

Additional comments:

Keep in mind that your brain makes neurological connections in the process of establishing habits. When you change your habits you are literally changing brain connections. Your brain will often fight those changes. However, when those new connections are complete then your new habits become easier. When the new connections become strong enough the new habits become more routine.

Also, any kind of accountability will help. Make changes with a group of people or at least with one other individual. Get a mentor that is already doing those things you want to start doing. Hire a coach to help you work those changes more quickly than you otherwise would have.

If you have any questions you would like my perspective on please put them in the comments.

3 Steps to a Year of Enthusiasm

Last week I went on a personal retreat. Every year I go to a cabin out in the middle of the woods. It is so far back in the woods you cannot drive a car to it. You must park about a ½ mile away and then load up an ATV and drive it through the woods to get to this cabin.

The second half of the week my family joined me, but the first part of the week I was completely shut off and focused on God and what he wants me to do in 2018. I have a renewed vision and energy. There is just something about nature that is rejuvenating!

I do several things while I am on this retreat. I watch some of my favorite movies that are inspirational and move me. My family and I always watch a movie called “Snow Day”. I do a whole lot of Bible reading and praying. I start listening to a new audio program that I will listen to 16 times during the upcoming year. It is a great time!

The biggest thing I do is get mentally, emotionally, and spiritually ready for the upcoming year. Here are three steps I took in that process this year:

I Got Clear and Focused

I laid out my “sweet 16” goals for 2018. I started with a list of 32 and narrowed it down to the 16 most important accomplishments for me in 2018. I got extremely clear about my top goals. I not only chose 16 goals for 2018, I actually ranked them so I know which ones are most important. Clarity is power. Where focus goes, energy flows. I got clear and I got focused.

I Created My Vision Board

Second, I made my vision board. On my vision board, I have my goals listed (in order of ranking), I have pictures and visual representations of each goal, and I have quotes and scripture that motivate me toward my goals. I will place this vision board in my office where I will see it every day. It will remind me of my commitments for 2018.

Left With ENTHUSIASM and Determination

Last, I left that little cabin with enthusiasm and determination. I am renewed, refreshed, and recharged. Come on 2018 – I am ready to take you by the horns and ride through the year!

What have you done to get ready for 2018? Are you still playing the resolution game? I have the resolution solution…STOP! Stop making resolutions. They seldom work because nobody expects them to work.

Instead, prayerfully determine your most important goals for 2018.  Create your own vision board, and grab hold of 2018 with ENTHUSIASM! I will be in Lexington, Kentucky on Friday, January 19, leading a Vision Board Party. It is the GoalGetter2018 Vision Board Party. This will help you overcome the resolution syndrome and find the resolution solution. You can find more information here.

What are you going to do to make 2018 the best year yet?
What action can you take right now?
Do not let 2018 be just another year. Make it be the most ENTHUSIASTIC ever!

The Secret To Success

Often, people say to me, “What if I put all this time and effort into making goals and planning my life and then I fail? It would be easier not to do it at all. If I set a goal and fail that will be embarrassing.”

I do not know if you know the secret of success or not, but I am about to give it to you.  You may want to write this down, put it someplace you will see it on a regular basis, and perhaps even say it out loud.  This is good stuff!  Are you ready?  Here it is!

The secret to success:  If you fall down seven times, get up eight!

Woo hoo!!  Isn’t that amazingly profound?  I hope you didn’t pass out from this amazing chunk of wisdom that I just passed along to you.

I hope you realize I am not being cocky, I am just being funny.  It’s a weakness of mine.  There I go again.

Anyway, the reason I am being so facetious is because this is so simple.  If you fall down seven times, get up eight… if you fall down eight times, get up nine… if you fall down nine times, get up ten…you get the idea.  Almost every person who is successful has been a successful failure.  They have learned how to profit from their failure instead of letting it beat them.  They have practiced what John Maxwell calls “failing forward.”

You see, what you gain and become by developing a plan of action to reach your goals is typically more valuable than actually reaching the goal.  Even if you fail to reach your goal, the person you become by going through a goals program better prepares you to reach your next goal or even the same goal next time around.  You are better prepared, more knowledgeable and most importantly, your suffering has produced perseverance, which produces character, which produces hope.  “And hope does not disappoint us.” (Romans 5:3-5).

Motivation to Move Forward

Next week I am going on a personal retreat to prepare my heart, mind, and soul for 2018. I will take this time to reflect on 2017 and what went well and what are some areas I can improve.

I will set some specific goals for 2018 and begin the process of developing my 2018 vision board. Through this process, I get myself focused for the year ahead. As I celebrate my victories and learn from mistakes of 2017, I will move forward into 2018 with great enthusiasm!

In Philippians 3:12-14 Paul teaches us about forgetting the past and moving forward toward our goals.  “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.  Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it.  But one thing I do:  Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (NIV).

He is teaching us that it does not matter what has happened in the past, but we are to focus on the future.  It does not matter how many times you have failed, messed up, or fallen flat on your face, get up… dust yourself off… keep straining toward the goal ahead of you.  Realize that failure is an event, not a person.  Yesterday ended last night and tomorrow is a brand new day.  It is not going to be easy, that is why Paul uses the word “straining,” but it will be worth it when you press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called you heavenward in Christ Jesus.

As you move into 2018, celebrate your past victories, learn from your past failures and use both as motivation to move forward. Do not let your past hold you back. Keep moving forward!

2018 holds brand new opportunities for you. Will you take hold of those opportunities or will you be too chained to your past to even see those opportunities? My encouragement to you is to forget what is behind and strain toward what is ahead, press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called you heavenward in Christ Jesus!

Action Steps to Organize Your Pipe Dream Into Reality

Many of us have dreams, but what separates pipe dreaming from what I call organized dreaming? Written down action steps! Once you begin to write down specific action steps toward your dreams, you begin to move from a mere goal setter to goal getter.

Action steps are the steps of action you must take in order to press on toward your goal.  Paul, the New Testament writer, wrote these words to the church in Philippi, “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.  Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it.  But one thing I do:  Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”  (Philippians 3:12-14, NIV).

Although Paul did not use the term, he is talking about action steps.  When you are “straining toward what is ahead” in order to “press on toward the goal,” you are taking action steps.  And in order for you to take the best action steps, you must write down the action steps you need to take.

Notice Paul did not say he had already reached his goal but that he was “pressing on” to take hold of it.  You could possibly call your “action steps” your “pressing on steps.”  Paul also points out that he is pressing on “to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.”  Remember, goals are Godly Objectives Assuring Lasting Significance.  If you know anything about the Bible, church history or you have been to church more than twice, you will know that Paul definitely achieved lasting significance.  His goals were Godly Objectives.

As you approach the end of 2017 I know you have some goals you want to achieve in 2018. How will your next year be any different than your last year? The answer is in writing down a plan of action to achieve your goals…ACTION STEPS!

I bring to the table a set of professional skills to help you identify what you really want in life, design action plans to reach those goals and get those things accomplished.

I offer one FREE 45-55 minute coaching session, done over the phone at a time that is convenient for you.  In this short call, we will work together to:

3 Simple Strategies to Deal With Discouragement

In your opinion, what is the biggest obstacle to people reaching their goals?

A couple of weeks ago I asked this question on Facebook. One of the top answers was: “the discouragement of other people.” David Wilkinson, in his book “The Dream Giver”, identifies four different types of people who discourage us from reaching our goals:

  • The Alarmist: They say, “It’s not safe!” They are motivated by fear and tends to exaggerate the risks.
  • The Traditionalist: They say, “It’s not the way we do it!” They do not like change. They often romanticize the past and they are motivated by custom and routine.
  • The Defeatist: They say, “It’s not possible!” They see problems everywhere. They are certain you cannot achieve your goal or dream.
  • The Antagonist: They say, “I won’t let you!” They use authority or intimidation to block your path. They come against you because they are afraid they will lose money or control. Or they may just not like you or what you are doing. (p. 104).

These can be family, friends, co-workers, bosses, neighbors, and sometimes, complete strangers. For some reason, some people just do not want you to follow your dreams or achieve your goals. So, what do you do about it? I am glad you asked. Here are three suggestions:

  1. Change who you spend most of your time with.

We are typically the average of the five people we spend the most time with. Be intentional about who you are around most of the time. You may not be able to completely control who you are around, but you can to some extent.

Hang around with people who dream and are goal oriented. Look for people to dream with you. Hang around people who support you in your enthusiastic journey toward your God-given potential.

  1. Change your self-talk.

Shad Helmstetter says, “by the time a person is 18 years old they have heard ‘no’ or ‘you can’t do that’ over 148,000 times.” If you hear “no” or “you can’t do that” over 148,000 times you will begin to believe it. Those messages that have been programmed into our minds continue to speak to us.

We must change that negative self-talk into positive self-talk. We must reprogram our minds. The best way to do that is to be more intentional about positive self-talk instead of just using negative self-talk by default.

As we make that change, it will change our thoughts, which will change our beliefs, which will change our feelings, which will change our actions, which will change our results. We cannot always change what other people tell us, but we can change what we tell ourselves.

  1. Hire a coach.

A coach helps you overcome the obstacles in your way so you can better and more quickly achieve your goals. Thomas Leonard put it this way, “a coach helps people set goals, do more than they would have done on their own, and improve focus as to produce results more quickly.” When you are dealing with the discouragement of others, a coach can help you put things in perspective instead of being sidetracked by other people’s negativity.

Here are some statistics on coaching:

  • 80% of people who receive coaching report increased self-confidence,
  • 70% benefit from improved work performance, relationships, and more effective communication skills
  • 86% of companies report that they recouped their investment on coaching and more (source: ICF 2009).

Most coaches offer one FREE introductory session. I would encourage you to find three coaches that look like they may be a good fit for you and schedule a FREE session with each one. Then choose one to work with so you can work past the negative input of other people. A good coach will always be an encourager that helps you stretch beyond your comfort zone. You can sign-up for a FREE coaching session with me here.

Getting past those negative influences is not an easy task. It takes finding more positive people to be around, changing your self-talk, and working with an encouraging coach to break through the negativity into the person God has created you to be. God has not called you to be a part of the mediocre, he has called you to greatness!

Top 10 Reasons You Need a Vision Board

Last year my wife, kids, and I created vision boards for 2017. We all made individual vision boards and we also did a family vision board together.  We will do the same thing for 2018!!

Almost every night, we get together before bedtime and each one of us gets to say what we did that day to get us closer to reaching the goals on our vision board. Here’s a clip from a Facebook Live where I demonstrate the first few minutes of our nightly routine. We keep our vision boards where we can see them. I keep mine in my office, the kids keep theirs in their rooms, my wife keeps hers in our hallway (she is brave) where we also keep our family vision board. This way we are constantly reminded of what we want the year to look like.

So, why do I need a vision board? I am glad you asked. There are several reasons, but I have developed a list of my top ten reasons:

#10.  Visualization of Your Goals.
This one is kind of self explanatory…..

#9.  Makes Dreams More Clear.
When you have a picture representing your dream or goal it becomes clearer in your mind.

#8.  Gives Motivation.
Out of sight, out of mind, out of motivation. In sight, in mind, plenty of motivation.

#7.  Increases Imagination.
The most powerful nation in the world is…imagination! As you go through the process of finding the right picture or quote for your goals, it jump-starts your imagination. The more imagination you have the more likely you are to reach your goals.

#6.  Greater Awareness.
When you keep your vision board in a place where it will be seen several times a day it keeps you constantly aware of your goals. This constant reminder will keep you more focused and more likely to accomplish the goals on your board. This is what a map or GPS does for us when we are driving. It is what a vision board does for us while we are dreaming!

#5.  Accountability.
A vision board is a consistent reminder of what you said you wanted. We all need accountability in our lives and a vision board is one more accountability partner. Sure it will not verbally talk, but if you keep it where you will see it several times a day it will speak to you…if you listen! Plus, other people in your home will see it and ask about it. When they do, you want to be able to confidently tell them what you have accomplished.

#4.  Clarity.
The process of developing a vision board will help you get clear on your goals. First, you must simply decide what goals you want to reach. Then go through the vision board making process.

As you seek out the picture, quotes, symbols, etc. to help you visualize your goals it gives you more clarity. As you look at those pictures and quotes daily your goals become clearer. Also, the steps to achieve those goals become clearer as well.

#3.  Increases Success.
Simply stated, you are more likely to accomplish your goals with a vision board. Again, because of the everyday reminder, it helps you to move in the direction of your goals. It is not magical, as some have stated, but it is powerful in moving you toward what you constantly see. They are so effective that many businesses have started using them.

According to Eilene Zimmerman, a writer from Forbes said that TD Bank has surveyed more than 1100 people and 500 small business owners nationwide. And the survey discovered that those who created a vision board that relates to their goals are almost twice more confident they will achieve their goals than those who do not. And the survey also showed that 82% of the small business owners that used a vision board reported that they have accomplished more than half of the goals they included on that board. (Full article found here.)

The success of using vision boards is valid. When the mind has a consistent picture of your future, it works harder to create it. The reason most goals are not accomplished is not that we can’t do it, but because we do not keep the picture in our head.

#2.  Focus.
In my book, GOALS: Godly Objectives Assuring Lasting Significance, I write “Genius has been described as the ‘ability to focus on one thing at a time.’” Where focus goes, energy flows. Without focus, you are very unlikely to accomplish your goals. Almost any significant accomplishment has had intensive focus.

If you struggle with focus a vision board will greatly improve your focus. It creates a stronger visual which will make focus more natural. When focus becomes easy and more natural, you are much more likely to do it. Remember, where focus goes, energy flows.

So, what is the NUMBER ONE reason to create a vision board in preparation for 2018…… (drum roll please…..)

#1. IT IS FUN!
It is just plain fun! It is fun to get together with other dreamers, believers, and achievers. It is fun to dream about the possibilities of 2018. It is fun to find that one special picture or quote that represents your dream.

It is fun to be creative like a kid again. It is fun to create, color, glue, draw, and paste with purpose and meaning!

The environment is fun! Everyone is sharing with one another and supporting each other. Most importantly it is fun to watch how you accomplish new goals through the year and you get to circle that goal on your vision board and celebrate…Have a party!!!

My family and I love doing vision boards. They keep us on task. And they make our upcoming year the best it can be!

When will you be doing your vision board?

Are you within a few hours of London, KY?  I’m hosting a Vision Board Party Friday, December 8th.  Very limited seating. Click here for more details.

What To Do With Obstacles

One of the important aspects of achieving our goals is often overlooked. That aspect is…. the obstacles in our way. What role do obstacles play in our journey to achieve our goals?

Obstacles, when looked at correctly, can often help us reach our goals.  “We also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.  And hope does not disappoint us.”  (Romans 5:3-5, NIV).  I think you would agree that having hope definitely helps us achieve those goals.  And what produces hope?  Character!  “The noble man makes noble plans, and by noble deeds he stands.” (Isaiah 32:8, NIV).  Noble means of outstanding character.  And what produces character?  Perseverance.  Perseverance is the ability to continue on after the excitement is over.  Perseverance is being committed no matter what.  And what produces perseverance?  Suffering.  Suffering is what the obstacles in your way often cause.

Now you have to ask yourself this question… “What am I going to do about it?  Am I going to let this obstacle kill my chances of achieving this goal or will it produce in me perseverance, character, and hope?”  The latter choice will “not disappoint us” while the former choice will cause us some level of disappointment for the rest of our lives.

BIRDS AND AIR

Have you ever stopped to think that air is the only obstacle that a bird in flight typically faces?  Yet without the air, the bird falls to the ground instantly?  Often times it is the same way with our obstacles.  So, do not bad-mouth your obstacles too quickly.  They just might be the only thing keeping you going.

Keep in mind you do not want to focus too heavily on your obstacles.  John Maxwell says, “Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goals.”  Do not let your obstacles take your eyes off your goals.  Instead, see them for what they are: stepping stones toward your goals.  Think about it, it is much easier to climb a rough mountain than it is a smooth one because the roughness provides the footholds.  That is what obstacles provide on your journey toward your goals.

We must identify those obstacles that are keeping us from reaching our goals. We must identify at least one action step for each obstacle. When we put those action steps into place we are on our way to achieving our goals.  Need some help?

I bring to the table a set of professional skills to help you identify what you really want in life, design action plans to reach those goals and get those things accomplished.

I offer one FREE 45-55 minute coaching session, done over the phone at a time that is convenient for you.  In this short call, we will work together to:

What My Mother-In-Law Did To Me In 2017

Last Christmas, my wonderful mother-in-law got me an excellent Christmas gift. She usually gets me good gifts anyway. I love flashlights and it seems like she gets me a new one every year. I love peanuts and she typically gets me a large container of Virginia Diner gourmet peanuts. Wow! My mouth is watering just thinking about it! I am glad Christmas will be here soon.

However, with all the great Christmas gifts my mother-in-law has ever gotten me, last year she topped them all! You guys know I am a personal development junkie. Last year she got me…The brand new…Tony Robbins “Ultimate Edge: A 3-Part System for Creating an Extraordinary Life in any Environment”!

It came with 26 CD’s of Tony Robbins’ teaching as well as 2 DVD’s and an additional 5 CD’s from his audio magazine, “Powertalk.” This is over 40 hours of Tony Robbins teachings and I have listened to all of the core 26 CD’s eight times over the course of 2017. “Thank you, my dearest mother-in-law. I can’t wait to see what you get me this year for Christmas. I have been a very, good boy!”

Anyway, one of the CD’s included in the “Ultimate Edge” is called “Daily Magic.” It is a CD made to use in the mornings to get your day off to a great start. One section of the “Daily Magic” CD is entitled “Get Grateful.”

The “Get Grateful” section is all about having an attitude of gratitude. During this time I reflect and I thank God for those things in my life that I often times take for granted. I thank God for:

My wife
My kids
Salvation
His grace
His forgiveness
His love
My health
That I get to do what I love
And a plethora of other things I am thankful for.

This helps me be aware of how blessed I really am. There is an old hymn titled, “Count Your Blessings” and this is exactly what I have done on almost a daily basis over the past year. It has helped to change my life.

When we start off the day with a grateful attitude, the rest of the day goes better. How can I complain right after I have thanked God for so many things that are right in my life? Having an attitude of gratitude can make the rest of the day so much better.

It is also healthier. Being grateful relieves stress and helps us feel more relaxed. When we thank God for our health, then we will have more health to be thankful for.

If you want to focus on the negatives of life, you will find them. If you want to focus on the positives of life, you will find them. You will typically find what you are looking for.

The more you complain, the more you will have to complain about. The more you are grateful, the more you will have to be grateful about. We tend to attract what we focus on.

As we approach Thanksgiving, I would encourage you to make Thanksgiving more than an annual celebration. Make it a daily habit. I made that change at the beginning of 2017 and I intend to continue that tradition in 2018. It has made all the difference…Perhaps it is the road less traveled.

In 2017, my mother-in-law made me a more grateful person making me more positive, healthy and focused.  Thanks!

What are you thankful for?

Using The Power of Focused Attention to Create Genius

In my last blog, we looked at writing out your “Dream List” or what some people call their “Be, Do, Have List.” If you have not read that blog you can go to it here.

Now, it is time to choose one focus goal from your “Be, Do, Have” or dream list.  You are no longer in the brainstorming stage so pick one that you really want to work on, one that stirs up enough passion in you that you are not going to give up when it gets difficult, because it will get difficult.  If it were easy, you probably would have already reached it.

FOCUS GOAL

Pick your goal to focus on (focus goal) and write it down.

After you write it down, look at it and see if you can make it any more specific.  For instance, instead of saying, “I want to lose weight.” Say “I want to lose _____ pounds.”  How much weight do you want to lose?  How much more money do you want?  What kind of new car do you want?  How much more reading do you want to do?  Make it as specific as possible before you go any further.

It is even better if you write it in the present tense. So, instead of saying “I want to lose ______ pounds.” Write it this way: “I weigh ______.” Our brains help us create what we see as a reality.

Two clarifying questions about your focus goal:

Question 1: What is the purpose of reaching this goal?

Now that you have made your goal clear and specific, let’s get clear about what this goal will do for you.  Ask yourself this question:  What is the purpose of reaching this goal?  In other words, what can this goal do for me?  How will my life be different after reaching this goal?  Will reaching this goal make my life better or worse? What is the purpose of reaching this goal?  The reason you must ask this question is that first, there is no reason to strive for a goal that has no purpose.  Second, it helps you focus on the benefits of the goal which is a motivator for you.  There will be times when you feel like giving up.  If, during those times, you make the effort to focus on the benefit of the goal rather than the trouble of getting there, it will often motivate you to keep going.

Question 2: Will this goal help me reach my purpose?

The second question you need to ask yourself is “Will this goal help me reach my purpose?”  Every focus goal must help you reach your purpose in some way.  If it does not, then it cannot be one of your focus goals.  Your life purpose is your ultimate focus.  So, if your focus goal does not move you in that direction then your whole life is out of focus which means it is not a “focus” goal.  Did that make sense?  I hope so.

Your whole life is about following your God-given purpose.  Any goal that does not move you in that direction does not need to be a focus goal.  You can still have it on your “Be, Do, Have” or dream list and you can still reach and accomplish this goal (as long as it does not take you away from fulfilling your life purpose) but it just does not deserve your focused attention.

Once you have run your focus goal through the focus goal filter you are ready to give it your focused attention. Remember, genius has been described as the “ability to focus on one thing at a time.” Do not try to have a whole list of focus goals. Pick one you can give all of your attention.
